As of this last Monday, photographer James Simmons can officially call himself Australia’s best professional photographer. A wedding photographer by trade, he’s joined distinguished ranks as this year’s Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year and earned himself some viral fame in the process.
“I work really hard for what I do but I never dreamed this win was possible,” he said after receiving the award. “I’m honoured to be positioned in the ranks of so many photographers that I’ve idolised.”
The secret to his unique style, says Simmons, is how he allows his long-term personal work to inspire his wedding photography. He’s never short for ideas, whether he’s shooting fine art, photojournalism or weddings:
Each time inspiration hits me for a shot I like to add it to the list of possible things I could do when I’m traveling or shooting for myself. That means I’m never lost for ideas and I can jump from one to another should the opportunity arise.
By constantly pushing himself and his clients to be both more comfortable and adventurous in front of the camera, he captures images that range from incredibly intimate to downright breathtaking.
