P. Diddy Becomes Latest Rap Star to Post a Photographer’s Image Without Credit or Permission

First it was Ludacris, who decided to convey the impression that he was on a beach by stealing and posting a photographer’s beautiful sunset photo on his Instagram account. Now, it seems famed rapper Shawn “Diddy” Combs is following in his copyright infringement footsteps.

Posted to P. Diddy’s IG account on Sunday the 24th and still not removed, the image above was simply captioned with the hashtag #diddyView… which would be okay if the rapper had actually captured the photo or at the very least asked permission to share it and attributed it correctly.

The photo was actually taken by LA-based photographer Cole, who posted this edit on his Instagram account a couple of weeks ago:

In that time, it seems somebody who helps run Mr. Combs Instagram account decided to screencapture the image, crop it (notice the bits of white still left at the bottom of the image) and repost it for some likes… and for all intents and purposes it worked. As of this writing, the picture has over 47,000 likes and some 480+ comments.

Granted, many of those comments are from photographers and photography enthusiasts pointing out that the image is stolen and not properly attributed, but that doesn’t seem to have had any impact on the IG account. For now, the photo is still live.

It’s interesting how in an article about not giving credit you didn’t give credit to @digital_editz the person who did the edit and added the fake moon to Cole’s photo

  • Gucci Sandal

    PetaPixel doesn’t give credit

  • Luboslav Bujnak

50 cent did the same to me .. the chrome lambo pic is mine and got like 80K likes

Did you consult a lawyer and collect your royalties?

  • Clayton Hotze

I mean go look at Snoops IG. He has mainly OC but also occasionally swipes stuff.

  • CrackerJacker

Is this the new way for rappers to garner their street cred? Thumbing their nose at IP law? So gangsta.

  • Luboslav Bujnak

not yet but i think i should because i asked him to take it down or at least give me the cred for it

  • Dylan

    Typo: Shawn should be Sean

  • OtterMatt

That’s what happens when you trade the street for the penthouse.

  • hansmast

They linked to proper place: the originally published location, which splits up credit appropriately.

Looks like it’s been taken down.

I’ve never, ever downloaded an mp3 so I have the right to judge!

Don’t beat yourself up about it, Dylan. Puff Daddy; or, Puff Diddy; or P, Diddy or;…well, who really gives a flying; whatever he calls himself, these days, can’t make up his own mind what the hell his name is, so why should you care about getting it right? Next week, it will probably be something different, anyway.
