Video: Action Sports Photographer Offers Solid Winter Sports Photography Tips

During the 2014 Burton US Open Snowboard Pipe Finals, photographer Brett Wilhelm gives us a quick look at the gear he takes advantage of, as well as a few tips for anyone looking to shoot events like this.

Wilhelm has been shooting winter action sports for over a decade and has been published by, Sports Illustrated and the NCAA, so it’s safe to say he knows his stuff. From explaining the glass he uses and why, to a few other small details, it’s a nice, quick watch that is useful for anyone who will be shooting out in the snow, not just adrenaline junkies.

Nice and to the point. Thanks for posting. Good tips.

The only other thing I could have hoped to know is if he autofocuses or just wings it manually.

lots of gear talk, but not really helpful on actually shooting. Having shot at the US Open in the past. It is wise to have an external light meter. Snow can be tricky. Pull direct and reflective readings. Plus a fill flash can make your images popl

  • Gannon Burgett

In all fairness, he probably knows the exposures by heart. He also mentioned having a flash in his bag.

  • Jason Kessenich

    Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.

valid. Just seemed like more clothing talk than actual shooting info. I’ve taken a lot of people out on the slopes to shoot and people often meter wrong and muddy photos.

  • Brett Wilhelm

@david bowles and @OtterMatt thank you for the feedback, might rework a subsequent piece I’m posting on to include that type of information, or perhaps shoot a new edit specific to metering and autofocus, lots of thoughts on both!
