Worn DSLR Grip Replaced with an Old Leather Shoe and Rubber Cement

When the grip on his Canon Rebel T2i finally peeled and warped beyond repair, NYU computer science and mechanical engineering student Rob Huebner decided to go the DIY route. He found a beat up leather shoe, cut the proper shape out of it, and attached the leather graft onto his DSLR using rubber cement.

So very glad we’re finally getting this type of in-depth reporting of the photography industry.  This keeps me coming back to PetaPixel day after day.

The model is only two years old, I hope it’s a very heavily used camera, because it shouldn’t have worn off already.

  • Armand Salmon

Mine wore off in less than 18 months with moderate use.
This is a known issue with T2i’s unfortunately. Both rubber grips, front and rear palm grip.

I don’t know I would go this route as it looks sloppy and replacement rubber grip on ebay is around $10 USD.

Seriously, I hate when people bitch and moan about things when they haven’t even paid for the service…

Exactly.  It’s free, so quite whining asshole.

My XT lasted about 4 years before the grip where my hand touched wore off, other places broke down first, usually from my hand rotating on it.

Ya also, no complaining, if you haven’t noticed this site isn’t exactly a tech site, or all that serious to begin with it’s a little more broad than that.

I will appreciate it very much!

I’m a pro photographer who has just got into leatherworking. I’m *sorely* tempted to rip the handgrip off my 5DmkII, remove the rubber cement using acetone, then cut a new shape out of 3oz waxed, tan-coloured cowhide.

But then this would be a little vain…
