Unusual sand dunes have been spotted on Mars. Almost perfectly circular, planetary scientists have been left baffled as to what they are.

In the boundless sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, photographer Ale Rodrigues was determined to capture the "pureza" (or purity) of the landscape.

This year, as photographers, we've been challenged to look at more ordinary subjects closer to home in pursuit of continuing our photography. 2020 has pushed us to find creative potential in the more everyday and mundane, perhaps duping us in the process that these subjects are in fact worthy of our attention.

Sometimes when I go to new locations, they can be so awe-inspiring that I feel photographically challenged. When this happens, I need to take a step back and think about the location's special traits that fill me with such awe.

Captured on January 24th by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, this abstract photograph captures almost a mile of Martian sand dunes in just one of the many crater on the planet's southern region.
