- PetaPixel 8/10
There is a lot to love about the 14mm VCM because the optical performance is there in many ways. For videographers, the excess ghosting, fairly well controlled breathing, extreme wide-angle look, and smaller size, will be characteristics that can be seen as desirable.
-
In my early tests it’s certainly very sharp across the frame, although like most modern wide-angles employs a software profile to correct the barrel distortion.
- OpticalLimits 7.5/10
If you require such a fast lens or have a priority on video productions, the RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM is an attractive option. Otherwise, Canon L-class zoom lenses are about as good at this focal length.
-
A wide angle and aperture were part of this request, but outstanding image quality was imperative to support the primary uses. Unquestionable is that Canon has f/1.4 VCM L Lens design dialed in.
-
[A]fter thinking about it, I did decide to highly recommend this one this time, because its small size, a bonus feature in itself, makes up for that particular optical defect in my opinion.
-
[T]his is a very expensive lens for what it is.
-
The lens is especially appealing for interiors, landscapes, and astro work, whether you're shooting stills, video, or both. The only real drawback is price, as the complex glass makes the lens notably more expensive than other primes in the 'VCM' range.
-
[I] actually enjoyed how exceptionally wide it was, particularly because the images are so straight.
-
Like I say, it's perhaps a little bit more niche than some of the other lenses in the range, but it's a great addition and we are really starting to see the VCM range fill out with a lot of different options depending on how you want to shoot as a photographer or videographer.
