Elon Musk Has Followed Through on His Threat to Remake ‘The Odyssey’ With Grok AI

Unhappy with the success of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Elon Musk said that Grok would create an AI-generated, feature-length version of The Odyssey. And he has sort of followed through.

Released on Friday, Grok posted a seven-minute video, which it says is “Episode 1 of our Odyssey series made with Grok Imagine.”

Musk promised that Grok Imagine would remake The Odyssey, touting a version that would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”

His bold claims came after he criticized Nolan for casting Elliot Page as Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, saying he “desecrated Homer and groveled on his knees just to meet the woke rules required to win an Oscar.”

But audiences turned out in droves to watch Nolan’s retelling of Homer’s poem, which was shot entirely on IMAX. The film is still showing in theaters despite releasing in July, and it’s reportedly approaching $1.8 billion in global box office revenue.

It’s difficult to see Grok’s version of The Odyssey making a similar impact. In fact, it’s being widely ridiculed.

“Perfectly encapsulates Elon’s taste. Absolute s***,” says Gabe beneath Grok’s post. “It’s supposed to be historically correct. Why are they talking in English?” asks Paweł Buderaski.

Digital Trends writes that “characters stare toward the horizon while the music insists something important is happening. The episode keeps presenting moments that should carry gravitas, then moves on before anyone gets to inhabit them.”

Many critics noted that all the characters are white and Odysseus is difficult to distinguish from the many generic Greek-looking men.

“Penelope has the familiar beauty of an Instagram filter asked to look worried,” adds Digital Trends.

Nolan has largely stayed out of the culture wars that engulfed his movie. A known technophobe, the British director compared AI to the Trojan horse that appears in the film.

“I think AI is a Trojan horse that everybody knows the Greeks are inside. It’s a transparent horse, it’s made of glass. Everybody can see what’s going on inside of there,” he told HugoDécrypte, per The Independent.
