You Can Now Extend the Expiry Date of a WeTransfer Link

WeTransfer has announced it has added the option to extend the expiry date of a download link in a move that will be welcomed by the photography community.

Clients and photographers alike know the pain of missing the expiry date on a WeTransfer link and the subsequent awkward exchange when one person has to ask if the other can resend the files.

WeTransfer has now added the option to extend the expiry date up to 30 days — depending on what plan the customer is on. If the user is on the free plan, the link can be extended up to seven days, according to Tech Crunch’s tests.

However, the extension feature is only available on the WeTransfer mobile app. The option to increase the expiry date is under the “Save for Later” tab which looks like a bookmark icon.

The new feature was announced on Tuesday on the company’s X (formerly Twitter) account. Some people were initially confused as the statement reads “WeTransfer links will no longer expire.” That led some to think that download links would remain alive perpetually but that is not the case. The error was down to some eccentric copywriting on WeTransfer’s side.

“Working as a creative or professional is chaotic. You’re busy and distracted; sometimes, that notification you meant to check slips through the cracks. Before you know it, your transfer link has vanished into the digital ether, and you’re left scrambling to get a new one from the client. It happens,” writes WeTransfer on its blog announcing the change.

“The new ‘Save for Later’ feature will help you avoid expired links and those awkward ‘Can you send it again?’ moments. You can now save a transfer for later and extend the expiration date up to 30 days in WeTransfer mobile app, giving you more time to preview or download to your mobile device or send-to-self to access on your desktop.

“Your saved transfers are neatly organized in a section within the WeTransfer app so you can find them when you need them. Plus, you gain full control over how long you can access your files, cutting out the need for awkward follow-ups. And the best part? You get peace of mind, knowing your files are safe and sound, avoiding missed deadlines and lost documents.”

WeTransfer was acquired by Italy-based Bending Spoons last month; the same company that purchased Filmic in 2022. The purchase was the company’s fifth acquisition in 2024 alone following a $155 million capital raise which took Bending Spoons’ valuation to $2.55 billion.
