Drone Captures 29,000 Foot Climbing Route to Summit of Mount Everest

A drone operator has captured incredible footage of the full Mount Everest climbing route that ascends 29,000 feet.

The video was taken by Liulang Cooki and shared to the DJI YouTube channel where it has received over 1.3 million views in little over a week.

There are several camps for intrepid mountaineers to rest when climbing the world’s highest mountain located in the Himalayas on the border of Nepal and Tibet.

The video starts at Everest Base Camp which has an elevation of 17,400 feet (5,300 meters) passing over four camps until it reaches the summit which has an elevation of 29,000 feet (8,848 meters).

Camp 4 is the final camp before 26,000 feet (8,000 meters) after which climbers enter what is known as the “Death Zone”. Its ominous name derives from the fact the human body will not survive for long at that altitude because of low oxygen levels, extreme cold, and dehydration.

Filming Everest With a Drone

There was little information given out by DJI other than the description which reads: “Experience the success of capturing the full Mount Everest climbing route with the DJI Mavic 3 Pro.

“Equipped with a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad camera, tri-camera system, and 43-minute flight time, this drone captures stunning 4K footage with amazing detail and vivid colors. Experience the grandeur of nature and the human spirit through this breathtaking journey.”

While the comments were full of praise with people joking that the video saved them “thousands of dollars and months of training to climb Everest! Now it’s officially scratched off my bucket list,” writes one person.

Others expressed concern that drones whizzing around Everest adds to the already overcrowding concerns that Nepalese authorities are worrying about with the Supreme Court calling on the government to limit the number of climbing passes.

Previously, DJI partnered with 8KRAW Films to fly the Mavic 3 drone off Earth’s highest point, the summit of Mount Everest.

It is extremely rare to see footage captured from a drone that goes over clouds because of the limitations on how high drones can usually fly, but the environment of Everest provided the 8KRAW film team with this unique opportunity.

During the shoot, the Mavic 3 ascended to over 9,232 meters into the air — over 5.73 miles — to capture stellar shots of the peak of the mountain. The images and video the team was able to capture are remarkable, showcasing more the amazing environment of the mountain than anything else.
