Kolari’s New Atlas Magnetic Filter System Promises Greater Versatility
Kolari Vision has announced Kolari Atlas, a new magnetic filter system that is designed to “revolutionize the way photographers and videographers create” and promises to be lightweight, modular, and easy-to-use.
To use the Kolari Atlas filters, an adapter ring ust first be screwed onto a lens. The adapter is available in a wide range of sizes, allowing the Kolari Atlas filter system to be used with various lenses. The following piece is the Base Plate, which forms the foundation for photographers and videographers to attach the magnetic filters.
The magnetic filters come in various types and can be stacked in any quantity and orientation. Available Atlas filters include neutral density (ND) (2, 5, 10, 15, and 20-stop strengths), variable neutral density (VND) (2-5 and 6-9 stops), circular polarizer (CPL), VND/CPL combination, mist diffusion, streak, and infrared.
In addition to the Atlas filters, users can add an optional single lens shade or a matte box to ensure better control over light. Kolari says Atlas is “the industry’s lightest matte box system.” The Kolari Atlas system weighs just 179 grams (6.3 ounces) at its minimum configuration weight.
Beyond the immediate usability improvements magnetic filter systems offer, Kolari’s filters include other user-friendly features. For example, the variable ND filter includes a ridged knob to quickly adjust the filter’s strength. The dual-purpose VND/CPL filter has two adjustment knobs, one for adjusting the strength of the VND and the other for rotating the circular polarizing filter.
The filters’ strong magnets ensure that filters stay attached, even while on the move. Users can move labeled filter tabs around on each filter to identify them within a stack. Further, to remove a filter, users twist and pull.
The Kolari Atlas adapter ring comes in 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, 86mm, and 95mm sizes, enabling use on a wide range of enthusiast and pro-oriented lenses.
Kolari offers three kits: Basic, Creator’s, and Titan. Each kit comes with the Basic Kit, which includes an adapter ring, base plate, 2-5 stop VND, 4-stop ND, lens cover, and filter cover. The Basic Kit is $549.
The Creator’s Kit ($1,499) adds CPL, 2-5 stop VND/CPL, streak, flare, and 1/4 mist filters. The Creator’s Kit also includes the Kolari Atlas Matte Box.
Rounding out the kits is the Titan Kit ($1,999) which includes everything in the Creator’s Kit plus 10-stop ND, 1/2 Mist, 1/8 Mist, and 4-stop graduated ND filters. The Titan Kit also comes with a weather-resistant carrying case, which is available separately for $74.
Beyond these kits, Kolari also offers specific wavelength infrared and ND filters with different strengths. Kolari’s infrared filters are designed for use with infrared and full-spectrum cameras.
