Precious Moments: I’ve Learned To Catch The Smiles of Sleeping Babies

6

I was photographing families and toddlers in 2010 and 2011 and my work was a bit uninspiring. Then I saw American photographers creating these beautiful, arty, creative sleeping newborn photos and I wanted to do it too!

It wasn’t easy. No one in the UK really saw my vision, but I managed to get a sweet family with a beautiful newborn called Daisy to help me launch this style of photography to my business. That was back in 2012 – and I haven’t looked back since.

It takes a LOT of patience to get the smiling photos seen it. You can tell when a newborn might smile: their little eyes might flicker a bit, and they might pull some funny faces. I sit and wait and hope for a big grin! Sometimes a little tickle on the lips of nose might coerce it, but more often than not it is patience and luck!

The best part of my job is being part of a family’s story. It’s an amazing feeling. For many families, I am photographing their first child and I am often their first trip out after coming home from hospital. What an honour it is to capture this very special time.

These pictures go on the walls, they are a legacy, and I helped tell that story. It’s a gift I never take for granted. They are only this little once in their lives. In these very early days they change so quickly, and you will really want to remember that soft fluffy hair, milk spots, teeny tiny fingers and toes — I might not be able to keep that adorable new baby smell though!
