Monkey Hijacks Photographer’s Camera and Shoots Self-Portraits

Three years ago wildlife photographer David Slater spent three days photographing a group of crested black macaque monkeys in an Indonesian national park. As he was trying to fend off some monkeys, another monkey approached his tripod-mounted Canon 5D and started playing with the remote shutter release.

They were quite mischievous, jumping all over my equipment. One hit the button. The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it. At first it scared the rest of them away but they soon came back – it was amazing to watch. [#]

Afterward, he found hundreds of photos taken by the monkeys on his memory card, including some self-portraits and even a portrait of Slater.

Here’s an interesting question: doesn’t the monkey technically own the rights to the images?

I’m rather impressed by the macaque’s sense of good composition. Fills the frame with his subject, uses the rule of thirds, even gets a nice highlight in the eyes.

Next thing you know the hipster monkeys are going to be running around with lomo stuff! UGGG lol

Thank you! What a wonderful feature! Brought a smile to my face.

Yes the monkey technically owns the rights, but the pictures were taken illegally so.. if he knows what’s best for him, he’ll keep quiet.

Aye, the apes do have a good eye indeed!

i see the photos are not credited properly to Mr. A. Macaque.

So is it just me or were the macaque monkeys also able to rotate the camera from landscape to portrait mode? I think some monkey business was going on here.

“Here’s an interesting question: doesn’t the monkey technically own the rights to the images?” Have them sign a release.

As a professional photographer, I find the query about the monkey’s rights to the images very amusing…

& just to show how simply digital cameras are…even a MONKEY can make a great photo…I smell an Olympus commercial (or Geico)

  • Vulcan Eager

serious question: am i allowed to used the first image as my avatar? please.

  • Falconhawkman

    Crested Macaques aren’t apes.

Planet Of The Ape, the beginning ;)

I was just about to write something similar. Canon can now claim there cameras are so easy to use, even a monkey can do it. (I’m sure the monkeys will work cheaper too!)

  • Mtsippel

So if they looked at the lcd each time, were they “chimping”?

  • Proginor

The monkeys own the right to the pictures only if they refuse to sign the model release.

  • Bman

or, the pictures were taken and then cropped latter on

isn’t there a proverb about monkeys in a room with typewriters?

  • Soph

    They’re not apes! God!

  • guest

No, the monkey doesn’t own the photos.  That assumes the monkey a human and has the same rights humans do.  A foolish mistake that far too many people make.

  • Brenz242

Ha! That was hilarious, well done wooga

  • KT Belle

Because he doesn’t eat sausages, fried eggs and chocolate.

  • Douglas

Am I the only one surprised to see that they chose to refrain from chimping?

  • http://twitter.com/ziz ziz

oh? are you sure? Go search flickr for “HDR” and consider the results.

  • Bertilnelhans

But why do you show my portraits to your friends ?

  • Brian

    No, they’re not God, either.

  • Cabbage

They don’t drink tea – and the monkey’s probably only a couple years old. Hasn’t broken or chipped or worn them down yet. ;)

  • Brian

Wish I knew what chimping was…must be my Yankee ignorance!

This thread was hilarious…even better than the article. Thanks everyone for the entertainment.
