"Northern Lights" is a new series of photos by French photographer Fabrice Wittner, who used stencils, light painting, and long exposure photography to combine historical portraits of Inuit people into modern-day polar night landscapes.
If you take a look at photographer Charlie Kitchen's latest work, the images appear to be landscape photos with 3D shapes added in digitally. But appearances can be deceiving: each photo was created entirely in-camera without any help from Photoshop. The secret? Stencils.
Flickr user TigTab creates beautiful scenes by light painting with hand-cut stencils. For each shot, the camera's shutter is left open while she moves about the location, firing her flash through the stencils in various locations to add the individual items to the scene. Some photographs take up to four hours to create from start to finish.
France-based photographer Fabrice Wittner has a neat project titled "Enlightened Souls" that consists of ghostly portraits created by light-painting with stencils (which are themselves created from actual portraits). Wittner first started the project in May 2011 after the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.
I first thought of it as an artistic and morale contribution to the 6.3 quake’s aftermath. I used stencils to paint enlightened characters to remember human losses and to show the spirit of a wouned city. It turned out to be an intersting way to share ideas and feelings about society and life. After all, this is what street art is made for.
