AI-Powered iOS App Turns iPhone Video into Anything You Can Imagine

Artificial intelligence (AI) company Runway has added support for 15-second videos generated by AI into an iOS app, allowing users to transform videos shot on iPhone into anything they can imagine.

In March, the company was the first to bring a text-to-video AI generator to the public and recently expanded that technology to support AI generated video that lasts up to 15 seconds. The company doesn’t claim that these resulting videos are necessarily realistic, but rather that they can result in visual spectacles that mainly showcase the power of the company’s technology.

“Runway Research is at the forefront of these developments and we ensure that the future of content creation is both accessible, controllable and empowering for users. We believe that deep learning techniques applied to audiovisual content will forever change art, creativity, and design tools,” the company says.

That technology is at the core of what are perhaps more “usable” tools, such as the ability to endlessly expand an image using text prompts, erase objects from video, seamlessly interpolate footage to allow for slow motion, add bokeh to a video, or make still images move.

Now Runway is making its technology even easier to access through an iOS app — called RunwayML — that packs some of its most impressive and popular tools into a format that works on mobile devices.

The standout feature is the ability to take a video and then, using a text prompt, reference image, or preset, turn that video into something entirely different. Of note, the app uses Runway’s Gen-1 image-to-video model, not Gen-2’s text-to-video software.

The app and new 15-second AI video generation feature are free for anyone to try, but the company does require paying a fee in order to remove watermarks from completed AI video generations. The app, which only launched on April 18, has also been updated with the ability to see an image of what the output videos will look like for free before they are generated into a full video, and the company also added notifications to allow users to know when an AI generation has been completed.

The RunwayML app is available to download from the Apple app store.

Update 4/28: Added clarification that the app uses Runway’s Gen-1 AI, not Gen-2.
