The Dirtiest Secret In Photography: Get Your Inspiration Outside Photography

chase

World-renowned photographer Chase Jarvis has a major piece of advice to share, something he’s calling “the dirtiest secret in photography.” It goes like this: find inspiration outside of the photography world.

This might sound like counter intuitive advice, but in the nine minute episode of his show #cjRAW, Jarvis goes on to explain why it isn’t. In fact, he claims that many (if not most) of the most successful photographers in the industry do this.

The reason is simple: if you turn to the photography world for inspiration, you’ll never stand out. Instead, expand your horizons and learn from entrepreneurs, writers, musicians, professional athletes, and so on and so forth. Some of what you learn will be creatively applicable to your photography, and it could be the birth of your break-out project or the catalyst that takes your work to the next level.
