Mark Newson and Jony Ive Talk About the One-of-a-Kind Leica M (RED) Camera

We’ve heard a lot about the Leica M (RED) edition created by design gurus Mark Newson and Jony Ive, but up until now it’s all been press release information. Now, we have a video in which both Newson and Ive talk a little bit about the creations they’ve put together for the upcoming Sotheby’s (RED) auction on November 23rd, including a section about the aforementioned camera.

When we first published the press photos of the (RED) camera, response was mixed with a slant towards the negative. People weren’t thrilled with the very Apple-esque aluminum camera, but both Ive and Newson seem to be quite happy with what they’ve come up with, especially emphasizing the amazing build quality of the final product.

Here’s another look at those aforementioned press pics:

The video above (which we’ve coded to start right at the part about the camera) gives you a little bit of insight into how they came up with the specific design for the one-of-a-kind Leica, while also talking about the spirit behind the auction.

Because, really, this isn’t about creating a fancy camera, but rather selling a fancy camera and donating a healthy sum of money to a good cause.

I’m tickled by the thought of a Leica camera that cannot be photographed nicely by another Leica (because of excessive aliasing).

Yeah, not really looking at the native resolution here…

It’s known lack of an AA filter and great glass makes Leica Ms subject to MORE moire. I mean it’s a feature that Leica owners usually wax on about: “My images are so sharp that it might hurt some of my photos..”

Why you’d go with a design on a limited edition that is harder to photograph with your own cameras, I think, is counterintuitive. Also, you’d think whoever took the marketing photos would know how to make the photo look nice.

This looks like an ugly toy camera. Can’t expect much considering Ive designed it though.

Who the hell is that man speaking complete gibberish at the beginning?
And then they end with him too?!
“Just taking a f*cking pill, that’s the most beautiful object in, the world!”

  • BillyBob

Design Guru? Marc Newson designed the Pentax K01 which is another ugly toy-like camera. Design principles haven’t changed in my lifetime, so becoming a design guru takes about an hour on youtube these days.

    Talk is cheap.

Hum Bono … you know, the founder of (Product)Red, and frontman of U2…

I’d brush up on current events if I were you if you really had no idea who he was.

    Leica, Leica, Leica….
If it didn’t have Leica on it bobody would get that excited.

  • theart

Right, but my point is that if you take a picture of a hexagonal grid with any camera, then re-scale it to web resolution, it’s going to alias. I think it would be safe to assume that the design was driven more by the in person experience of holding the camera than how it would look on the web, because if you care more about taking pictures of your camera than taking pictures with it you’ve pretty much failed at life.

That said, the mesh surface is going to be a major dirt magnet. So like other Appler products, this is going to look delightful coming out of the box and progressively more awful with use.

Wow! I haven’t seen Bono in a long time. He grew old for sure. Glad to see the same enthusiasm coming out of him though.

“I think it would be safe to assume that the design was driven more by the in person experience of holding the camera than how it would look on the web…”

I’d agree somewhat with that design choice IF it wasn’t a one-off charity auction item, which sadly will most likely not be used as a real camera should.

I respect and support the cause, but I don’t like the design of the camera.
Had it not been a Leica, I doubt this would have attracted that much attention.
As a Pentax user who isn’t crazy about the K01’s design either, I have to say that, in my opinion, practicality in a functional object should always be a priority over aesthetics.
It is the main reason I dislike the pseudo-retro design in cameras that becomes more and more dominant, as it represents an obsolete interface, suitable for adjusting just speed and aperture. As cameras now have to handle ISO, White Balance, Resolution, Frame Rates and a ton of other settings, a new paradigm is necessary. The modern oversimplified minimal trend evident in this design is just not adequate.

This is the ugliest camera ever….

    Braun are having a giggle.
