Photography is One of the Most Attractive Male Hobbies to Women

A man with short dark hair and a beard, wearing a brown plaid shirt and blue jeans, is smiling at the camera. He is holding a DSLR camera with a flash attached and giving a thumbs-up with his other hand. The background is plain white.

There are all sorts of reasons to take up photography: a creative outlet, to pursue a career, to document an important topic, et cetera. Few photographers take up the hobby for the purpose of appearing attractive, but it turns out that it could be a serendipitous by-product.

A new study by Date Psychology looking at the most attractive male hobbies found that photography is the tenth most alluring hobby to women.

Over 90 percent of the female responders rated photography as an attractive hobby for a male to have which is correlated by males who also ranked photography as a hobby that they believed would be well-received by the opposite sex.

“Glancing at these two charts, we can see a good amount of congruence in what men and women both selected as the most attractive hobbies to women,” Date Psychology writes.

The 814 participants — 48 percent of which were female — were given a survey of 74 male hobbies and had to binary rank them as either being “attractive” for a man to do or “unattractive” for a man to do.

Date Psychology says that it made the survey in response to a similar chart that recently went viral across social media which proved controversial when “Playing video games” was ranked as the least attractive male hobby. That study has dubious origins so the website wanted to make its own findings.

It acknowledges that its survey respondents skew disproportionately toward women of “high social status, high level of education, and who are predominantly white.” Date Psychology points out that different male hobbies may play better with different groups of women.

Is Photography an Attractive Hobby?

Looking more closely at the data, photography is the fifth most attractive “Artistic” male hobby, according to the study. Ironically, painting is ahead of photography, and so are writing and playing an instrument — with the latter considered the most attractive in the artistic category.

However, in the “Cultural” section, photography is ranked as the third most attractive hobby; only being beaten by reading (top) and speaking foreign languages.

So, if you’re a well-read, bi-lingual photographer who likes to write songs for the band you’re in then you’re probably not reading this because you’re out on a date.
