Last Space Shuttle Launch Captured from an Airplane Window Seat

Space Shuttle Atlantis blasted off for the last time today, the final launch ever for NASA’s Space Shuttle program. 18-year-old Ryan Graff was lucky enough to be flying to Miami as the Shuttle launched, and captured this awesome photograph of Atlantis’ smoke trail using his iPhone.

Persio. That is probably the stupidest and most crass thing I have ever read. Congratulations. You are The Moron.

Such an awesome shot – What ever happened to the Wonder and excitement of seeing the man’s peaceful exploration of space. Has it become so commonplace. I was 13 when Yuri Gargarin flew into orbit and followed all the space flights thru the 60′s and 70′s. Just a shame to see such a jaded individual as above.

This is an amazing shot! Wish I could have seen it as it happened..

Beautiful picture! I was just wondering if the people on the plane could’ve seen the space shuttle. It must’ve been amazing. :)

Amazing picture! There is so much beauty in this world, much more than what we could capture with our senses .-)

I love the Freudian slip about the Space Shutter (sic).

Haha. I think it wasn’t so much a Freudian slip as it was finger muscle memory :) Fixed, thanks

This shot is a smoke trail of an amateur rocket kit, and not the shuttle launch. The shuttle is flying at an angle as it breaches the cloud cover, but this photo shows it coming straight out. Also, the smoke trail clearly corkscrews, which is consistent with an amateur rocket running low on fuel. The space shuttle would never create a corkscrew trail. It’s an amazing shot, no doubt, but it’s not from the shuttle launch.

Check out the photo in the second link of the post. It was shot just moments before and shows what you’re describing :)

Looks like the shuttle to me, minutes after liftoff.  The winds toss the exhaust trail around quite a bit.  The cloud deck also matches up with other shots.  I was there and distinctly remember the sky being clearer behind us.  You can even see the coastline in the pic.  Looks legit to me. :)
