Portrait Displays has announced a new partnership with SmallHD to introduce the first-ever Calman-Ready reference monitor.

According to the company, the Calman Ready lineup of displays from SmallHD has a unique ability to communicate directly with the Portrait Displays’ Calman Color Calibration software which allows users to get fast and precise color calibrations, reducing downtime on set and improving the efficiency of the production teams.

“We are thrilled to welcome SmallHD as our first Calman Ready reference monitor partner,” Eric Brumm, President, and CEO of Portrait Displays, says. “This partnership represents a significant milestone, with the ease of Calman’s AutoCal workflow, filmmakers can save time on-set by calibrating with record precision and efficiency.”

Leveraging this new Calman Ready monitor designed for the Cinemarket, cinematographers, directors, and digital technicians (DITs) responsible for calibrating reference displays in the color grading bay can now achieve easier and consistent color accuracy throughout the entire production process.

The company says that the PageOS 5 operating system SmallHD uses integrates seamlessly with Calman which allows the calibration to be scaled across various modes including both SDR and HDR. This will eliminate the need for separate calibrations which will save time and also ensure consistency across multiple viewing scenarios.

Additionally, the company claims the partnership will provide broader creative freedom in “Look Management” since the calibrated displays can accurately represent the intended look throughout the entire production workflow just by loading up the desired Look Up Table (LUT) onto the calibrated monitor. From here, the on-set and post-production teams will be able to make color-critical decisions based on the live visual representation.

“The Calman Ready integrated workflow simplifies the SmallHD calibration process and helps eliminate common calibration mistakes including limited-range vs full-range sources as well as incorrect patch size and LUT bit depth settings. Accurate calibrations can be achieved in only a few minutes without the need for an external pattern generator,” Michael Claes, Director of Analytics and Color Science at SmallHD, says.

The new customized calibration workflow will work with a wide range of calibration tools (A full list of supported hardware can be found here) which should make transitioning to the new displays smoother and easier for creatives with an existing set of calibration tools. The latest release of Calman 2023 (v 5.14.2) also includes usability updates.
