The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) is celebrating the successful inauguration of the world's most powerful solar telescope, the Inouye Solar Telescope, through a pair of extremely detailed photos of the Sun's chromosphere.
The National Solar Observatory has just released the highest resolution images and video ever taken of the sun's surface. The images, captured with the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, capture the sun in unprecedented detail, revealing features as small as 18 miles (30km) in size for the first time ever.
Swedish astrophotographer Göran Strand uploaded a time-lapse to YouTube today that is anything but your run-of-the-mill sunset lapse. For one, he's waited almost a full year to shoot this footage. For another, it was shot using a solar telescope, and so magnificently captures the sun in striking detail as it dips below the silhouette of the foreground landscape.
