Caleb Barrett wanted a simple ring light to play around with, so he built himself one for just $20 using built himself a makeshift ring light using eight cheap compact fluorescent light bulbs. The lights are pretty dim and have a horrible color rendering index, but are fun to play around with if you're just looking for something to experiment with.
Videographer Joel Loukus created a continuous ring light source -- which he calls the "WreathLight" -- using a wreath frame and two strings of Christmas lights. The total cost came out to $24. It's a cheap and easy way of adding some soft lighting to your portraits.
I had some stuff lying around as well as saw some parts as I was out and thought this would be fun to make. I have around $20 invested in parts. On eBay I saw ring lights for anywhere around $40 on up, so this will save you money and it was fun to make.
