My Sad 500px Christmas Story

On December 22nd, I received an email from 500px saying that I sold a photo for $600. Obviously, I was thrilled -- it's nice to get something like this right before Christmas. Upon logging into my 500px account, I saw that there was another sale too for the same photo. The total from the two sales: $2,700.

B&H is Shipping an Extra $3,200 Sony a7R III to Customers by Accident

When I picked up my new $3,200 Sony a7R III camera from B&H Photo at UPS on Monday morning, I was surprised at how it was packed, because it was a box inside a box. This never happens, so imagine my surprise when I opened this rather large second box to find two cameras inside.

This Photographer Melted His Drone Shooting Photos of Lava

While shooting for two weeks in Hawaii last month, Israeli photographer Erez Marom's drone had an Icarus experience. Marom flew his $1,500 DJI Phantom 4 camera drone too close to lava flows and accidentally melted part of the camera. He was able to capture some gorgeous photos of lava up-close, though.

A Nikon D850 Field Test Gone Wrong

I was very excited when I first read about the new Nikon D850 and I knew that this camera would be exactly what I had been waiting for. The larger file size is welcomed from a fine art perspective and in combination with a highly improved focus system, fast processors and better ISO capabilities, I could easily see myself using this camera also for wildlife.

Man Taking Pictures Gets Slammed by Hurricane Irma Wave

As Hurricane Irma barreled toward the Florida panhandle this past weekend, some people ignored warnings to flee or find shelter and decided to go out and shoot photos of the approaching storm instead. The short video above shows what happened to one man who did this at Florida's southernmost point.

Amazon Mistake Gives Photographers Free $150+ Solar Eclipse Lens Filters

Yesterday, we reported that Amazon has been issuing refunds to photographers who purchased LEE's Solar Eclipse lens filters, warning that they were not sourced from a recommended manufacturer. Now it looks like the whole thing was a mistake on Amazon's part and that a lot of photographers just got free pricey $150+ lens filters.

I’m a Wedding Photographer, and I Fell Into a Fountain with All My Gear

As wedding photographers, we often work in conditions that are far from perfect. We also often need to make decisions in a split second so the day runs smoothly for the bride and groom. Everyone of us is also afraid of doing something that may prevent us from completing the job. And unfortunately... that happened to me. I fell into a fountain.

Catalan TV Photoshops Away Cristiano Ronaldo’s Abs… Badly

In the world of soccer, the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid burns bright, and it's seen as a conflict between Catalan and Spanish nationalism, respectively. Catalan national TV snubbed Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in a bizarre way this week: they tried to Photoshop away Ronaldo's famously chiseled abs. What resulted was a glaring Photoshop fail.

Photog Crashes $400,000 Car While Setting Up a Shoot

If you're going to be doing a photo shoot involving a $400,000 sports car, you should probably be extra careful and have an experienced driver handling it. A photographer in the UK just crashed a $400K through a showroom window while trying to set up for a shoot.

I Swallowed a 64GB microSD Card

A couple of weeks ago, my team and I pulled together a weekend poolside shoot with models, perfect weather, and a drone. I operated the drone and got some beautiful footage. Magnificent footage. Award-winning footage.

Photographer Garry Cornes of Glasgow, Scotland, attended the demolition of a 24-story building this past Sunday. After joining the crowd there and setting up his camera on the other side of the street, Cornes had his view ruined at the worst possible time when a bus rolled in to photobomb his shot.

Steel Wool Photographer Burns Down Historic 1920s Landmark

If you ever try your hand at light painting photography with burning steel wool, be extra careful with safety and legality. Just a few months after a photographer allegedly destroyed a historic shipwreck in California with his sparks, another steel wool photo shoot has burned down a historic 1920s building in a US national preserve.

NHL Hockey Player Injured by Photographer’s Lens

NHL photographers are getting a little too involved in the action these days through the little hole in the rink glass that they shoot through. A week after a photographer dropped his lens hood through the glass and had it confused as a puck by the players, a photographer has accidentally injured a player by being a little careless with his lens.

This is What Happens When a Camera Gets Dropped in Lava

Ever wonder what happens to a camera if you accidentally drop it into a volcano's molten lava? Well, wonder no more, because some poor photographer found out the hard way.

Photographer Amanda Stevens was working at Samy's Camera in Pasadena, California, this past weekend when she came across this Sony Alpha mirrorless camera that had been destroyed by lava damage.

My Metadata Fail, or: Why You Should Always Check the Copyright Info on Loaner Gear

The life of a freelancer can be very unpredictable. I find it to be epitome of “feast or famine.” It’s good to have some down time on equipment every now and again to get things serviced, and I took this latest opportunity to get my D700 serviced by Nikon.

One of the perks of a NPS (Nikon Professional Services) membership is loaner equipment. My Nikon D700 went in, and they sent me a D750 on consignment. No sooner did that D750 arrive than I had a barrage of phone calls for assignments. I barely had time to get acquainted with the new body before we were off to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to photograph Coach Bret Bielema of the Arkansas Razorback for the Wall Street Journal.

This Guy Captured an Unlucky First Shot with His New GoPro Camera

YouTube user coreyeroc recently took his brand new GoPro HERO2 out to the golf course to capture some footage of his golf swing. Unfortunately for him, his very first shot with the camera turned out to be his last as well. As you can see in the 35-second clip above (warning: there's a bit of strong language), Corey's unlucky swing quickly gave his new camera a permanent front-end makeover.
