Shooting Portraits with a Giant Mirror in the Corner of an Open Pit Mine

We've seen a number of photographers use mirrors in creative ways in recent years. Photographer Stefan Schlumpf recently decided to go big with the idea for a series of portraits.

For his "Silent Dialog II" project, Schlumpf set up a large mirror in outdoor locations -- including a giant open pit mine -- and used it to create a beautiful backdrop to frame his models.

A Glimpse Into Iron Mountain’s Mine, Home of Many Iconic Photo Originals

In rural Butler, Pennsylvania, hidden away 220 feet under the hills is one of the most valuable priceless photo collections in the world. That's where a company called Iron Mountain helps store Corbis gigantic collection of historical photos in a refrigerated, maximum security vault.

We've taken a couple of looks at this vault in the past, once in 2011 and again in 2014. The 6-minute video above is yet another look at Iron Mountain's fascinating facility: in addition to showing the photo collection in the mines, it takes a step back and gives us a better picture of what the whole underground operation is like.

Light Painting Photos Taken Inside Marble Mines in Italy

We've heard it from light painters before: the air is their canvas. The great thing about light painting is the ability to create something great just about anywhere. But that doesn't mean that you have to start with a blank or un-interesting 'canvas,' so to speak.

Photographer Stefano Bellamoli decided to get creative about where exactly he created his light paintings, and so he took his lights and camera into the marble mines of Verona, Italy.

A couple of months ago, a massive landslide at Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon Mine cut production at the second largest copper producer in the US in half. What began as a movements measured at only fractions of an inch, turned into a 165-million ton wall of loose dirt tumbling down the northeast section of the mine around 9:30pm local time on April 10th.
