The Marine Corps has confirmed that one of the six marines in the iconic photograph "Flag Raising on Iwo Jima" has been misidentified for over 70 years. The man who was thought to be Pfc Rene Gagnon was, in fact, Cpl Harold “Pie” Keller.

As a Navy public affairs officer, I get to take pictures of amphibious assault vehicles storming a beach, Marines landing in tiltrotor aircraft, and the unusual tableaus that make up life in the Navy.
This year I was presented with the unexpected opportunity to take a short trip to Afghanistan, and was able to take my camera gear with me. I had wanted to shoot portraits of deployed Marines being, well ... themselves for quite some time now.
So with about two weeks notice I was off to the sand box. Cameras, film and the closest thing to a darkroom I could pack into my luggage in tow.
For her project titled Marked, photographer Claire Felicie shot close-up portraits of the marines in the 13th infantry company of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps before, during, and after their deployment from 2009-2010. She then arranged the portraits into haunting triptychs that show the toll war has on a person's eyes and face.
