The extremely active volcanic region near the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland has erupted, giving filmmakers who happened to be in the area a chance to capture new, visually stunning aerial footage of lava flows.
A photographer has captured incredible images and footage of Iceland's most recent volcanic eruption.
After the Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption began in March 2021, photographer Jan Erik Waider traveled to the Nátthagi valley in Iceland and captured beautifully abstract photos of lava flowing and cooling.
The Perlan Museum -- host of a state-of-the-art 8K planetarium and other exhibitions focused on Iceland -- commissioned filmmaker Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson, founder of Arctic Images, and drone pilot Arnar Þór Þórsson to fly an 8K-capable 360 camera over the erupting volcano to capture an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience.
