Sigma's dp3 Quattro compact camera is a very different piece of photographic equipment. From the unit’s elongated body shape to its internal Foveon image sensor, it is a mini technological and design wonder. However, just because a piece of tech is fascinating does not mean it will be suitable for its craft. The Sigma dp3 Quattro may be mesmerizing, but is it worth the $1000 price tag?
As of yesterday, Sigma has shaken up its point-and-shoot line with a major refresh of the powerful-yet-strange DP Series of cameras. Dubbed DP 'Quattro' (the old ones were Merrill) the new line of Foveon compacts from Sigma represents a significant visual redesign and some minor (but important) changes on the inside.
Sigma's DP1, DP2, and DP3 cameras are known for the fact that they're compact cameras with beastly APS-C Foveon sensors inside. With such novel sensor technology at their core, comparatively less is said about the f/2.8 lenses on the front of each camera.
Some folks over in China decided that they wanted the glass of the camera to be just as hardcore as the sensor within, so they figured out how to modify DP cameras to offer an Leica M mount, turning the bodies into interchangeable cameras (and proper mirrorless cameras).
Earlier today, pictures and specs for Sigma's soon-to-be-announced DP3 Merrill leaked in an article that has since gone missing on the Spanish camera site DSLR Magazine. Of course that wasn't before all of the info contained in that article was copied and pasted on several rumor sites, bless them.
