The Canon 80D is the latest in Canon's line-up of mid-range, enthusiast level DSLRs. On paper, the 80D looks to be an improvement in practically every regard over the 70D of 2013, especially with the introduction of a new dual-pixel 45 point auto-focus.
Although so far the stories of Flickr's death have been greatly exaggerated, there's no denying the photo-hosting leviathan is in a difficult situation. At best, it will be taken over by a company content to keep things ticking over and just claim the subscription fees, but I'm guessing that it will change.
Sony are back with the sequel to 2012s surprise hits, the RX1 and RX1R. The new RX1R II still packs a full frame sensor into a barely-larger-than-a-compact body, but this time it's the same sensor from their spectacular A7R II.
The arrival of Canon's new flagship is hardly a surprise: the early leaking of the 1D X Mark II specifications and images online must surely have rankled at Canon. But the important thing is that the 1D X Mark II is finally here!
The G-series of cameras from Canon have always been their enthusiast/prosumer range with features and specs that typically outclass their other compact cameras. With the compact camera segment suffering heavily at the hands of ever-improving smartphones, the enthusiast user is pretty much the only slice of the market which I think has any future. Smaller cameras and smaller sensors, but with controls and features photographers come to expect from more expensive models will still appeal to many as either a backup or an alternative to a larger, more capable body.
The Sony RX100 III is a fantastic little camera and when I had the chance to play with its successor earlier in the year I was very excited to see if the RX100 IV would build upon the already high standards Sony has helped set. While Sony has been making some impressive advances in the high-end camera market, in the pro-compact area things are a lot tighter with Canon just edging ahead of the RX100 III with the G7X.
