The Canon 1D C is a cinema DSLR that's geared towards video recording. But just because it was built for filmmaking doesn’t mean its value to still photographers is diminished. In fact, it can be the complete opposite, as photographer Michele Celentano demonstrates in a two-part video series recently put out by Canon.
A report on Canon Rumors is pointing out an issue with Canon's flagship full-frame DSLR and its Cinema counterpart: the 1D X and 1D C. Apparently users have been reporting problems with the 1D X's AF when shooting in less than 0° C, and if an anonymous report sent to CR is accurate, Canon knows about the problem.
Canon recently announced an exciting firmware update for its professional grade cinema camera: the EOS-1D C. But even though the fact that the 1D C can now shoot 25fps 4K is exciting, it's not improvements or bug fixes that have people talking, it's the fact that Canon is requiring that you go to an authorized service center to get the new firmware installed.
Last week Anthony Jacobs of Perspective Aerials reached out to tell me that he had become the first person to fly a Canon 1D C with a drone rig. The 1D C is a camera I have a very mixed relationship with, but when you see the way someone like Anthony puts it to work you can only imagine what the 1D C's ability to capture 4K in such a small package could make possible.
Canon has officially announced its new EOS-1D C 4K cinema DSLR, a camera that offers the same body and still photography features as the 1D X but is more geared towards high-end motion picture and television production. It records 4K at 24fps and 1080P at 24/25/30/50/60fps, shoots 1080p uncompressed with 8-bit 4:2:2 Clean HD via HDMI, and offers a headphone jack instead of the PC socket found on the 1D X. The 18MP full frame sensor inside has ISO 100-51,200 for still and a max of 25,600 for video. The 1D C will be shipping by the end of this year with a price tag of $15,000 -- more than double the $6,800 1D X.
