Blackmagic Reveals ‘More Powerful’ Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro

Blackmagic Design has announced the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, what it is calling a more powerful enhanced version of the popular video camera that has a brighter HDR touchscreen, built-in ND filters, a larger battery, and more.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K features an SLR-like design, and the Pro model continues this aesthetic. It features a handgrip with a control layout similar to mirrorless still cameras, with easy access to settings like ISO, white balance, shutter angle, and recording. While that hasn’t changed, and the sensor appears to be the same as well, and the experience around it has.

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro features the same 6144×3456 pixel Super 35 sensor and EF lens mount found on the original Cinema Camera 6K, but the Pro adds a built-in 2, 4, and 6-stop motorized ND filters, adjustable tilt Full HD (1920×1080 pixels) HDR LCD with a 1,500 nit peak brightness and two mini XLR audio inputs along with a larger NP-F570 style, Sony battery.

As a note on the screen, it now tilts for easy viewing from above. On-screen overlays show status and record parameters, histogram, focus peaking indicators, levels, frame guides, and more.

As with the original 6K camera, the Pro records using standard open file formats. It supports industry-standard 10-bit Apple ProRes files in all formats up to 4K or 12-bit Blackmagic RAW in all formats up to 6K.

The Pro model also uses the same “generation 5” color science as the high-end URSA Mini Pro 12K, and will give you access to a new dynamic 12-bit gamma curve designed to capture more color data in the highlights and shadows.

“The color science also handles some of the complex Blackmagic RAW image processing, so color and dynamic range data from the sensor is preserved via metadata which customers can use in post-production,” Blackmagic writes.

The last major upgrade to the Pro model is the addition of an optional viewfinder that attaches to the hot shoe mount. Blackmagic will sell 1280×960 color OLED display with a built-in proximity sensor with a 4 element glass diopter that also supports a 70-degree swivel range. It also comes with four different types of eyecups for both left and right eyes. The viewfinder is available for $495.

Blackmagic debuted the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro as part of its ATEM Mini and Camera Update live stream:
