Canon Update Fixes 1D X Mark III ‘Lock Up’ Issue, Adds 24p Recording

Canon has released a firmware fix to the dreaded “lock up” issue that has plagued some 1D X Mark III users, making the camera unusable for high-speed shooting. Firmware version 1.1.0, released earlier today, fixes the problem and adds a few additional features at the same time.

The problem cropped up in early March, when Canon users like Hamilton Pytluk found that their new action/sports camera was turning off mid-burst and resetting before it could shoot again. Pytluk demonstrated the issue in a video (above), and several other users confirmed that they had been experiencing the same problem.

A few weeks later, Canon confirmed the issue, explaining that it was caused by a glitch with the electronic level in the optical viewfinder, and promising a firmware update in “early April.”

Today, Canon made good on that promise by releasing Firmware Version 1.1.0 for the Canon 1D X Mark III. According to the change-log on Canon USA, the update fixes several minor bugs and annoyances, adds 24p recording in both Full HD and 4K, and, importantly, fixes the issue with the electronic level:

[Firmware 1.1.0] corrects the phenomenon in which, when the electronic level is set to “Show” in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may freeze when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.
