Paul C. Buff Unveils the LINK, Its Most Powerful and Versatile Flash

Paul C. Buff today announced its new LINK 800WS flash. It becomes the most powerful and flexible product in the Paul C. Buff lineup, and it aims to “link” the company’s past products with the demands of modern photographers.

The LINK features an all-metal housing and a detachable battery that lets photographers easily take the unit on location. You can also easily take it throughout the world thanks to its ability to plug-and-play with voltages ranging from 100 to 240. On the back is a digital control panel with an LCD display.

“We know it has been a bit of a wait, and we appreciate those who’ve been patient with us as we’ve developed the newest addition to the PCB flash unit family,” says PCB Marketing and Communications Manager Anthony Romano. “We are a smaller company which does help to keep our prices low, but in-turn it takes a bit longer to develop new gear.

“During our development time, we had a chance to observe what’s out there and hear what photographers not only want, but what they need. We only want to provide equipment that is beneficial to our customers and unique to our product line.”

There are 9 f-stops of power variability in the LINK, from 3.1 Ws to 800 Ws, and adjustments can be made in 1/10 f-stops.

The LINK features an adjustable 800W-equivalent daylight-balanced LED modeling light that’s DigiBee-esque but even more powerful.

Other features and specs of the LINK include flash durations as short as 1/15400s, color consistency +/- 100K at any power, a rubber diffusion dome cover, and audible and visual recycle indicators.

There will be a companion HUB remote that will allow the LINK to perform HSS (up to 1/8000s) and TTL. It’ll initially be compatible with Canon and Nikon gear, but Sony compatibility will follow “soon.”

There’s also going to be a companion BUFF app that will allow you to control your lighting using an iOS or Android smartphone. The app will connect to the flash via the HUB and will initially be able to adjust flash and modeling light power, but more features will be accessible later on.

The LINK flash unit is already listed on the PCB website with a price tag of $896. That’s just for the flash — a package containing the flash, a charger, a battery, and the HUB remote will cost $1,200. In terms of availability, the LINK, HUB, and app are all scheduled to hit the market in the Spring of 2020.
