Sigma Overwhelmed by E-Mount 24-70mm f/2.8 Preorders, Apologizes for Possible Delays

Sigma Japan has issued a statement apologizing for the “supply status” of the recently released 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens for Sony E- and Leica L-Mount, explaining that pre-orders “exceed our expectations” and “production cannot keep up with demands.”

Unfortunate as this news is, shipment delays should come as no surprise given the Sigma lens’ rock bottom price tag and expected performance.

At $1,100, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is literally half the price of Sony’s 24-70mm G Master and Panasonic’s 24-70mm f/2.8 for the L-Mount. What’s more, initial reviews are extremely positive. Sony Alpha Blog hailed it as “the best in its category for the A7RIV,” claiming it only falls short of Sony’s G Master variant at the 24mm focal length.

The full (translated) apology on the Sigma Japan website reads:

SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is scheduled to be released on Friday, December 20, 2019. Orders that exceed our expectations at SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Production cannot keep up with demands It has become. As a result, we apologize to some customers that it may take some time for the product to arrive.

We apologize for the inconvenience of our customers and the people who are waiting for our products, but we are currently working hard on production, so please be patient.

Right on cue, Adorama marked the E-Mount variant of the lens as Temporarily On Backorder (the L-Mount version is still listed as available for pre-order):

This is an incredibly exciting lens that will likely push Sony and Panasonic to drop the price of their 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses for full-frame mirrorless. Knowing that, we’re willing to forgive Sigma for underestimating demand by a little. To learn more about this lens, head over to the Sigma website.
