Fujifilm Unveils the X-Pro3 with Plasma Hardening and Hidden Screen

Fujifilm has announced the new X-Pro3, a rangefinder-styled mirrorless camera that was designed with street photographers and photojournalists in mind.

The X-Pro3 continues the X-Pro legacy with its hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. The optical viewfinder (OVF) has a 0.5x magnification and parallax-correcting frame lines that help you compose your shots with the “real world” in front of you. You can also see outside the frame, allowing you to better anticipate subjects moving into the shot and see the context of what you’re capturing.

The viewfinder system also contains a 3.69-million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) that allows you to see in real-time exactly how your resulting photo will look. The EVF has a 1:5000 contrast ratio.

At the heart of the camera is a back-illuminated 26.1-megapixel X-Trans CMOS sensor, up slightly from the 24.3MP one found in the X-Pro2. The sensor is backed by an X-Processor 4 Quad-Core imaging engine and has an ISO range of 160-12800.

The phase-detection autofocus is now better in low-light environments, working down to a near-darkness luminance of -6EV.

In the area of video, the X-Pro3 can shoot 4K footage at 30fps.

Build-wise, the top and bottom base plates of the camera uses titanium for an ultra-durable body with a fantastic strength-to-weight ratio — it’s half as dense as stainless steel but seven times more durable.

And in addition to the standard Black version of the camera, you’ll also have the choice (with an extra cost) of a Duratecht surface-hardened camera (in either black or silver) that uses cold plasma technology for a scratch-resistant finish.

On the back of the camera is a hidden 3-inch, 1.62-million-dot, 180-degree-tilting touchscreen. When the screen is closed, there’s only a mini-display visible that shows essential camera settings, “removing the distraction of a fullscreen while shooting,” Fujifilm says.

Other features and specs of the camera include a new CLASSIC Neg. Film Simulation mode (which simulates color negative film), a newly developed shutter release unit (that’s smoother and more dependable), a USB-C port, and a weight of 17.5oz (497g).

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 will be available with price tags of $1,800 for the standard Black version or $2,000 for the stronger DR Black or DR silver versions.
