Last year, New York-based guerrilla historian, urban explorer and photographer Steve Duncan gave an 18-minute talk (seen in the video above) to the audience at TEDxPhoenixville. Duncan spoke on his motivations for going deep into the underground infrastructure in major cities around the world, peeling back layers of a city to see and document things that are hidden to people above ground.

Metaphysics of an Urban Landscape is an ongoing series of photographs by Milan-based photographer Gabriele Croppi that features high-contrast, black-and-white photographs of major cities around the world. His images often feature a single subject illuminated by a slice of sunlight in front of a background filled with shadows and negative space. His photographs of New York City are especially striking, as a normally chaotic city is turned into a silent play of light and darkness.

New York-based artist and storyteller Ourit Ben-Haim’s Underground New York Public Library project first began as sketches of rough photographs of people reading on trains. The photos are unrefined and voyeuristic, like reading over a stranger’s shoulder.

“The Untitled Project” by photographer Matt Siber features urban scenes with all traces of text stripped away and reconstructed in a separate frame. Siber shot the original images in North America, Europe, and China over the past nine years.
