Horseback wedding in Banff, Canada

Manchester-based couple Lisa and Alex are on a mission to find the best place in the world to get married, and through first hand experience rather than other people’s opinions. They’re currently in the midst of a two-year journey around the world in a 24-year-old camper van, hunting for both the perfect location and the best cultural wedding ceremonies.

They stage a mock wedding in each country they visit — in the style of a culture associated with that location — and recruit a wedding photographer to help them document that experience.

Using Photos to Communicate While in a Foreign Country

Using Photos to Communicate While in a Foreign Country jade mini

Preparing for a trip to a foreign country where you don’t know the language? If you don’t have an Internet-connected phone handy, a camera can help you out. Redditor Jhojgaard regularly travels to various countries around the world, and suggests that storing some key photos on your camera can come in handy when you’re in a communication crunch.

Things that are useful to store on your memory card include the names of places you need to get to and common things you might need (e.g. a certain subway station, the restroom, a taxi). If you have a smartphone with you, you can toss all of the “translation photos” into a separate album.

Filmmaker Spends Nike Ad Budget on a Trip Around the World

Filmmaker Casey Neistat (whose peanut butter jar lens fix we featured recently) was recently commissioned by Nike to create an advertisement for its new FuelBand. Instead of spending it on a standard ad, he decided to “go rogue” and spend the money traveling around the world with his friend Max. They captured video of themselves traveling 34,000 miles across three continents, 13 countries, and 16 cities over a span of 10 days. Neistat states,

We only packed backpacks—they were big backpacks, but one of the rules was we had to have both hands free at all times. That meant no duffels and no rolling bags. We only had underwear and socks, because we each had two cameras, chargers, extra batteries, laptops, and hard drives. That’s the bare minimum, and that takes up a lot of space. We had total redundancy, because if one of us were kidnapped, and never seen again, we had to make sure we could still make the movie.

The resulting video they made has gone viral and will probably reach many more people than a traditional advertisement would have.

Thanks for sending in the tip, Simone!

Why Camera Gear May be Safest in a Four-Wheeled Suitcase When Flying

Why Camera Gear May be Safest in a Four Wheeled Suitcase When Flying airplane mini

You probably already know that it’s not a good idea to include your expensive camera gear with check in luggage, but what if you have no choice? If you must, then putting your gear inside a hard-sided “spinner” suitcase with four wheels is your best bet. The Huffington Post has published an interesting interview with an anonymous baggage handler, who gives the following advice:

Hard-sided suitcases will get less damage, but also look for well-designed handles that are attached with rivets and some sort of protection around the wheels. Speaking of wheels, the best bags to get are the “spinners” with four wheels on the bottom. We like these because we don’t have to throw them when loading. We just roll them down the belly of the plane so your bag and its contents will suffer much less damage.

The handler reveals that bags are commonly subjected to all kinds of abuse due to the strict schedules the handlers must abide by.
