How to Get Your Photography in an Art Gallery

At some point in their career, an artist will be approached by a gallery or will approach galleries looking for representation or to have an exhibition. You’ve had some success at local art shows and fairs and have made some inroads selling your photography online, but now you want to get your work out there and start looking for galleries to show your work or represent you.

Irving Penn’s Timeless Photography and ‘Photographism’

When you mention Irving Penn, the first images that may come to mind are his fashion photography and mostly his 165 Vogue covers. He also photographed everyday objects, even detritus from New York streets like cigarette butts, leaves, and even chewed gum. This was described by former Director of the Art Institute of Chicago James Wood as 'the cosmos underfoot.'

7 Composition Techniques Seen in The Queen’s Gambit

Now and then, it just so happens that I find a show or movie that visually amazes me. I was blown away by the colors of Grand Hotel Budapest and by the cinematography of Birdman. The hit Netflix series The Queen's Gambit is one of those surprises that I have discovered recently.

Pop Culture’s Homage to Gordon Parks

When HBO’s Lovecraft Country premiered last weekend, sci-fi and photo nerds reveled at the detailed homage to several photos taken by the legendary photographer, director and author Gordon Parks. While best known for “American Gothic,” much of Parks’ work throughout his lifetime touched upon the U.S.’ ignominious, racist past – work that has entered the contemporary consciousness through pop culture appropriation.

In the 12-minute video above, Shindler transforms the theater into a studio and darkroom, introducing the live audience to this 19th-century photography process by creating a large-format tintype portrait of Adam Savage (the co-host of Mythbusters).

What Makes a Shot… feat. Slaves on Dope at Heavy MTL

Let me start by stating that I’ve been a fan of Montreal’s Slaves on Dope since the mid to late 1990s. Does that make a difference in the relevance of the rest of this blog entry? Nope. Just felt like saying that.

I’ve had the chance to shoot them a few times live and they are always fun to see…. and ever better to shoot! They were playing at the Heavy MTL festival this past August, early on the second day, and I made my way to the small stage to grab a few shots.

Photo Caption Leads to Libel Lawsuit Threat from Guns N’ Roses Singer

Back in 1992, Los Angeles-based photographer Laura London lived down the street from the singer of the rock band. The singer's name was Axl Rose. The band was Gunz N' Roses.

Flash forward twenty years, and London is currently holding a photo exhibition for her project, "Once Upon a Time ... Axl Rose Was My Neighbor," at Coagula Curatorial in LA. The show features photographs from the time London spent living a stone's throw away from a man who is now considered one of the greatest hard rock singers of all time, along with portraits of Rose wannabes and band photo recreations. One particular image in the show attracted the attention of Rose, and not in a good way -- it led to a lawsuit threat.

Photographer Lets Exhibition Attendees Build Their Own DIY Photo Books

In 1974, Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama had an exhibition in Tokyo called "Printing Show" that featured a Xerox machine in the center of the room manned by Moriyama himself. Visitors were encouraged to select photos from the show, which were then reproduced and assembled into custom photo books. This past weekend, Moriyama repeated the show in New York, once again using a photocopier to provide attendees with custom signed editions of the DIY book. The book was titled "TKY" and bound in a nice silk-screened cover.

Toronto-based artists Brad Blucher and Kyle Clements have an exhibition titled "Take a Picture" which features paintings that are invisible to the human eye but visible to cameras. To do this, they use a frequency of light that is outside the visible spectrum but visible to the CCD and CMOS sensors found in digital cameras.
