Photographer Philippe Echaroux tells us that he recently completed a photo shoot for a series he calls, “The Pigment Party”. Echaroux’s idea was to capture studio-lit portraits of models posing serenely amidst explosions of colorful powders. After covering the studio with tarps, hanging up a black backdrop, and setting up his lighting, Echaroux had his assistants toss pigment powders of various colors onto the model’s face.

In December 2012, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City featured an interactive art installation by Philip Worthington called “Shadow Monsters“. The exhibit was created using a computer, a camera, two projectors, a light box, and some clever software. When visitors stepped in front of the light box, their shadows were magically transformed into creatures that were brought to life through sound and animation.
Photographer Joseph O. Holmes saw the unique exhibition as a photo project opportunity. However, instead of photographing the resulting monsters, he decided to turn the camera on the participants themselves, capturing their monster-making activities as a series of silhouettes. Read more…

Since its inception in 2005, street fashion photography blog The Sartorialist has become something of a bellwether in the fashion industry, turning photographer Scott Schuman into a kingmaker that can give ordinary fashionable folk 15 minutes of intense Internet fame by spotting them, shooting their photo, and publishing it to his blog.
Schuman recently hosted a party attended by many of the subjects seen in his posed street portraits. He took the opportunity to produce this beautiful short video that captures a followup-up portrait of a number of them. Read more…
Photographer Brandon Stanton has generated quite a bit of attention in the photo world through his project Humans of New York, which features thousands of portraits that form a visual census of the city. His goal is to capture 10,000 portraits of New Yorkers that are associated with points on a map.
Stanton recently visited the country of Iran to shoot similar portraits of its inhabitants. He tells us that by visiting the country as a tourist rather than a press member, he was able to get a “remarkable amount of access” in order to create a beautiful collection of intimate street portraits. “The Ugly Truth” is a bizarre series of portraits by photographer Rut Mackel. Each photo features a not-very-pleasing photo of a face that looks flatted and disfigured. No, the subjects don’t actually look like that, and no, Mackel didn’t use any kind of digital manipulation for the photos. She simply asked her subjects to hold a pane of glass and then press their faces against it. Read more…
Doumé Jalat-Dehen of Brittany, France creates custom coats, sweaters, and hats for dog owners using the fur gathered from their beloved pets (the stuff that results from shedding and brushing). Photographer Erwan Fichou decided to base one of his photo projects around the furry fashions. His series Dogwool features portraits of these owners wearing Jalat-Dehen’s creations, standing besides the animals the materials were gathered from. Read more…
