‘Flash Paint’ Your Way to More Striking Portraits with This One-Light Setup

If you’re looking to spice up your portraiture a bit, Smoking Strobes has a neat little trick that you should try out if you don’t already have it in your repertoire. It’s done using speedlights, although probably not in the way you normally use them.

Rather than the speedlight being on-camera or triggered through a set of wireless triggers, this method of lighting a subject is done by ‘flash painting’ one pop of the flash at a time. Read more…

Jeremy Meeks, the 30-year-old alleged criminal whose ‘sexy’ mugshot took the Internet by storm sparking Twitter movements and Facebook Pages dedicated to his beautiful bone structure, has apparently signed a $30K modeling contract with Blaze Models in LA. Convict Becomes Famous Meme After His ‘Beautiful’ Mugshot Goes Viral

Mugshots aren’t exactly known as the height of beautiful portrait photography, but 30-year-old felon Jeremy Meeks’ mugshot is something else entirely. Within 24 hours of the photo being posted on the Stockton Police Department’s Facebook, Meeks’ glamour shot had received over 23,000 likes and nearly 6,000 comments… as of this writing those numbers are up to over 87,000 likes and over 11,300 comments.

It’s safe to say this image has gone well and truly viral, turning Meeks into a meme and sparking everything from Photoshop spoofs to a ‘Free Jeremy’ Twitter campaign. Read more…

Leaving behind a pioneering legacy, pin-up model turned pin-up photographer, Bunny Yeager, has sadly passed away yesterday at the age of 85. Born March 13, 1929 Yeager started her career as a pin-up model herself, eventually switching sides of the camera and becoming one of the most commercially successful female photographers of our time. Think before you post. This should be the message greeting all of us when we open up our social network of choice. Before we get a chance to do anything else, a big bold ALL CAPS message reminding us that our social media comments have consequences should appear front and center.

Maybe if they had, Australian photographer Mark Hamilton wouldn’t be embarrassed, apologizing for a Facebook tirade in which he threatened to release racy photos of a model because she had ‘liked’ a post that insulted him. Read more…
