Light Painter Puts the Lumia 1020 Through Its Paces, Shows You How to Do It Too

Nokia recently teamed up with light painting photographer Ian Hobson to prove to the world that a smartphone as advanced as the 1020 was capable of capturing awesome light painting shots. The resulting video is part tutorial, part inspirational, part Nokia ad — and if you can ignore the last part, the first two make it well worth a couple minutes of your time. Read more…

Nokia’s New ‘Goodbye DSLR’ 1020 Ad Will Either Make You Laugh or Piss You Off

What’s the best way to entice the professional photography market to buy into your device? Insult them of course! At least that seems to be Nokia’s strategy in its latest Lumia 1020 Ad, “Goodbye DSLR, Hello Lumia 1020.” Read more…

DxOMark Put the Lumia 1020 to the Test as a Dedicated Camera, See How it Performed

lumia1020case

When DxOMark tests out the quality of mobile phone cameras, they usually classify and rank them as such. There’s a whole mobile section to the site where one can compare different smartphone cameras using a different scoring system.

The thing is, the Lumia 1020 is no typical smartphone. Nokia has touted it as a camera first, and it seems DxOMark was listening. When they put the Lumia 1020 through its paces, they tested it as a full-fledged camera. And it didn’t perform half bad. Read more…

When Nokia announced that the new Lumia 1520 and the current Lumia 1020 would both soon have DNG Raw capabilities, the response was polarized — half of the smartphone photo community was excited, the other half skeptical. Would these files really give you the latitude that RAW is known for? Or would they just be a massive waste of hard drive space. Read more…

Vertigo-Inducing Video Put Together from 41 Photos Taken with the Lumia 1020

Creating video from photos isn’t a new idea. Be it stop-motion or some form of time-lapse, we see it all the time. The creation above by filmmaker Paul Trillo is a little bit different though. In 41 photos he takes you down 41 New York City blocks, mesmerizing you right into the sunrise. Read more…

Nokia Syncs Flashes with the Lumia 1020 for Full-On Professional Studio Shoot

As the battle for cameraphone supremacy rages on, companies want to win over amateur and professional shooters alike. That’s not to say that Nokia or Apple expects you to replace your SLR with a Lumia 1020 or iPhone 5S, but they would probably love to claim that “most professional photographers use our phone.”

To that effect, Nokia has put together this video showing how its own camera expert Ari Partinen managed to pull off a real studio portrait shoot using only the Lumia 1020 and some synced external flashes. Read more…

Ridiculous Lumia 1020 KIRF Boasts a ’41-Megaplxel’ Speaker Instead of the Camera

1020fake1

Most everyone is familiar with knockoffs — some might even own a couple — but when it comes to the world of tech the general wisdom is to stay far away. A Prado purse or Foakley sunglasses aren’t going to be much of an issue, but a fake Canon speedlight can become a serious problem.

Of course there’s a big difference between a knockoff and what’s referred to as a KIRF (keeping it real fake) product, and the most recent fake we’ve run across is just that: a Lumia 1020 look-alike that boasts ’41-megaplxels’ of audio performance where the PureView camera should be. Read more…

Humorous Ad Paints an Accurate Picture of Smartphone Photo Culture

If you’ve been to a play or other event put on by your child’s elementary school recently, you might have experienced something similar to what the Nokia ad above depicts. Meant to tout the prowess of the Lumia 1020, it does a better job at showing just how close we’ve gotten to ridiculous when it comes to smartphone photography. Read more…

Nokia Claims the Lumia 1020 is ‘The First Smartphone to Put the Camera First’

A few months ago, an Apple commercial touted the iPhone as “the world’s most popular camera.” Nokia’s new ad for the Lumia 1020 takes a less statistical approach: the company is admitting that the 41-megapixel behemoth is first a camera, and then a phone. Read more…
