The Best Tripods in 2024

You've probably heard it before: a great tripod is one of the most valuable investments you can make as a photographer. Conversely, one of the worst investments you can make is buying a mediocre or straight-up bad tripod.

Light Painting with a Giant 2-Foot Ball of Steel Wool

Steel wool is often done by lighting a small ball of steel wool on fire and then swinging it around in a long exposure photo while it burns. But what happens when you take it to the extreme? The folks over at Joby recently decided to see what you get when you burn a giant 2-foot ball of burning steel wool.

GekkoPod Camera Mount Uses Flexible Legs to Latch Onto Anything

Zuckerim Inc. has launched a Kickstarted campaign to fund their new product, the GekkoPod. Modeling its design off of gekko feet, the GekkoPod aims to be a flexible phone and camera mount for all of your favorite devices. Similar to JOBY’s GorillaPod, the GekkoPod serves as a nifty little solution for photographers on the move. However, Zuckerim’s product may have a few advantages over the competition.

UltraPlate Gives Your Camera Two Tripod Mounting Points On the Cheap

About a month ago, we shared a Kickstarter for something called the Fusion Plate. The product made it easy to go from using a sling-style strap -- something many photographers prefer to the traditional -- to using a tripod without having to mess with screwing anything in.

The Fusion Plate has since far-surpassed its funding goal, but if you didn't get a chance to buy one of those, or if the $65 price tag was just a little out of reach, the folks at JOBY have announced a more affordable alternative.

Joby GripTight: A Universal Clamp-Style Tripod Mount for Smartphones

GorillaPod maker Joby announced a new product today designed for people who regularly use their smartphones for photography or videography. Called the GripTight, it's a universal tripod mount that'll work with most popular smartphones. It's basically a compact spring-loaded clamp with a tripod mount built into the bottom. Stretch the rubbery clamp over your phone, and it'll grip it tightly in place.

Joby Laid the Smackdown on GorillaPod Counterfeiters During Photokina

Joby sent out a press release today warning consumers that there are counterfeit versions of its popular GorillaPod flexible tripod floating around in the wild. While that isn't too newsworthy in itself -- what gear isn't being counterfeited these days? -- it's the juicy details surrounding the release that are quite interesting. Apparently the company directly confronted companies involved in making imitations during Photokina 2012 in Cologne, Germany last month.

Joby GorillaPod Micro Tripod Designed to Become Part of Your Camera

There's plenty of mini-tripods out on the market, but Joby's new GorillaPod Micro tripods are special in that they're designed to stay attached to your camera at all times. The legs fold up neatly when not in use, allowing you to stick your camera into your pocket or a case without having to remove the tripod. It features zinc alloy legs, rubber feet, and a head that offers 36-degrees of tilt-motion.
