Sony 85mm G Master Lens Gives Zeiss Otus Performance for Half the Price

DxOMark just finished testing Sony's 85mm f/1.4 GM lens, part of Sony's uncompromising new line of G Master lenses. And the results show that Sony really did leave out the compromise; in fact, it looks like the 85mm f/1.4 GM is on-par with the lusted-after Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 ... at less than half the price.

Why DxOMark Doesn’t Test Fujifilm Cameras

If you reference camera sensor ratings published by DxOMark, you may have noticed that the France-based company doesn't test Fujifilm cameras. It's surprising, given that Fujifilm sensors have been praised by many reviewers in recent years.

No, DxOMark doesn't have anything against Fujifilm, and no, it's not something fishy going on behind the scenes. The reason is simple: DxOMark isn't currently able to properly test X-Trans sensors.

DxOMark: The Sony Xperia Z5 Packs the World’s Best Smartphone Camera

Sony has been hitting home runs as of late when it comes to digital camera sensors. In late August, sensor testing company DxOMark reported that the Sony a7R II contains the best sensor they've ever reviewed. But is Sony able to repeat its performance in the world of smartphone cameras? It appears the answer is a resounding "yes."

DxOMark just published its review of the Sony Xperia Z5 camera sensor, and the sentiment is the same: the Xperia Z5 contains the best mobile phone camera sensor the reviewers have ever seen.

DxOMark: The Sony a7R II Has the Best Sensor We’ve Ever Seen

It looks like the hype surrounding the new Sony a7R II is justified... at least when it comes to sensor quality. DxOMark tested backside-illuminated full-frame sensor in the camera -- a world's first -- and the sensor received the highest overall quality score ever awarded by the testing lab.

I Want the DxO One iPhone Camera Attachment to Succeed, But it Won’t

When Sony announced the QX-100, I jumped on Amazon and pre-ordered it immediately. It seemed to solve the most obvious problems I had with smartphone photography quality: a larger sensor, better low light performance, and better optics. But upon receiving it, the deficiencies quickly became apparent. The display-less design required you to use Wi-Fi to pair it with your camera -- a frustratingly slow experience. I tried shooting blind, but the lens barrel design gave you no indication of whether the image was straight. And finally, the thing wasn’t pocketable.

5DS Handed Highest DxOMark Score for a Canon, But Still Trails Nikon and Sony

DxOMark published its sensor test scores for the 50.6-megapixel Canon 5DS and 5DS R DSLRs today, and the news is both good and bad for Canon shooters. On the good side, the cameras scored the highest scores (87 and 86, respectively) ever achieved by Canon sensors. On the other hand, they still lag behind the Nikon D810 and Sony a7R (97 and 95, respectively) in overall quality.

Nikon D7200 Crowned the New King of APS-C by DxOMark

It seems like Nikon is doing the right things when it comes to putting quality sensors in its cameras. Gear testing company DxOMark has just announced that it has found the new Nikon D7200 to have the best sensor quality among all APS-C cameras. It's "the new APS-C champ," the testers write.

Diving Into the Numbers: Is the Canon 7D Mark II as Bad as DxOMark Says it Is?

After much anticipation and positive initial reports about the new Canon 7D Mark II, DxOMark's review of the camera's sensor was met with some shock. According to their tests, the Mark II's sensor was on par with the 5-year-old Nikon D300s, and even fell behind smaller Micro Four Thirds sensors -- not good.

But was this assessment fair? Photographer and educator Tony Northrup -- who praised the 7D Mark II in his rapid review -- wanted to find out. And so he created this in-depth video to dive into DxO's numbers, make some side-by-side comparisons, and see if the 7D really is as disappointing as DxO seemed to report.

DxOMark Disappointed with the 7D Mark II; Sensor Lags Behind Some MFT Cameras at Base ISO

If you're a Canon user and a hater of all things DxOMark, you might want to skip over this one and read this article on how well the 7D Mark II is weather sealed instead. If you're a Canon hater, read on! You'll love this!

Earlier today, the lab released their official review of the Canon 7D Mark II, and while there were a few bright spots, the tone of the review in general might be summed up by the word 'meh.'

Nikon Scores Another DxOMark Hit with the D750, Its 6th Camera to Make the Top 10

Nikon’s newly-announced D750 has impressed those who have managed to get their hands on it thus far, but to properly put it through its paces, DxOMark ran it through its trusted sensor tests.

As expected, it came out with quite high marks, putting it in 8th place on DxOMark’s overall rankings and making it the 6th Nikon camera to make it into the top 10.

A List of The Best Lenses for the Nikon D810

If you just got your hands on a brand new Nikon D810, or maybe took advantage of the price drops on used D800/e models, DxOMark's newly updated list of the top lenses for these high-res DSLRs could come in very handy.

DxOMark Reveals Which Lenses Perform Best on Nikon’s D800E

It’s fairly well-known that, when it comes to capturing images, more important than almost any camera body is the glass being put in front of it. However, there are times when your camera body plays a vital role in determining the quality of the image rendered by said glass.

To prove this and also help show off what glass performs best with a particular body, DxOMark has published a series of articles that break down what the best lenses are for the Nikon D800E.

DxOMark: The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art Series Lens ‘Comes Seriously Close’ to the Otus

We have our own Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens on the way for full review, but until then it's interesting to see what some of the big names in gear review are saying about this optical beast and how it compares to the Otus it was meant to compete with.

Today, one of the biggest of those reviewers, DxOMark, released the results of its tests -- and news is good if you're planning to pick one of these beauties up.

The Nikon 1 V3 Falls Short of Cheaper MFT Shooters in DxOMark Tests

DxOMark is certainly not the be-all-end-all of camera sensor testing outfits, but what it has going for it is consistency and a whole lot of experience. So while you might not put much stock in their sensor scores, DxO is a great resource for comparing sensor performance between models.

We say all this because there are some Nikon fanboys who will immediately be upset by the news that DxOMark claims the new Nikon 1 V3 might not live up to its price tag.

Nikon D4s Beats Canon’s 1D X in DxOMark Tests, Falls Short of the Df in Low Light

The Nikon D4s is only a marginal improvement on the D4, but that didn't stop Nikon from touting it as significantly better in low light and faster to boot. The question is, do those claims hold up when you put the camera through its paces?

Well, the DxOMark team did just that, and the results may or may not surprise you depending on how much stock you put in press release boasting.

RED Epic Dragon Outstrips the D800E in DxOMark Tests, Breaks 100-Point Barrier

Until today, the Nikon D800E stood at the top of the DxOMark totem pole with an amazing sensor score of 96. But the champion has been unseated, and not by some Canon or Nikon full-frame camera or one of the impressive new APS-C shooters we've seen recently. No, the D800E has been decidedly put out of first place by the RED Epic Dragon video camera.

DxOMark Put the Lumia 1020 to the Test as a Dedicated Camera, See How it Performed

When DxOMark tests out the quality of mobile phone cameras, they usually classify and rank them as such. There's a whole mobile section to the site where one can compare different smartphone cameras using a different scoring system.

The thing is, the Lumia 1020 is no typical smartphone. Nokia has touted it as a camera first, and it seems DxOMark was listening. When they put the Lumia 1020 through its paces, they tested it as a full-fledged camera. And it didn't perform half bad.

The Nikon Df Takes DxOMark’s Low-Light Crown, Outperforms the D4

It seems the Nikon engineers had some tricks up their sleeves when they put the D4 sensor inside the new Nikon Df, because while the sensor earned identical scores to the D4 in almost every category when DxOMark put it through its paces, the Df actually BEAT the D4 in the "low-light ISO" category.

But more than that, it beat EVERYBODY in that category, narrowly edging out the previous champion D3s to claim the number one low-light spot among DxOMark's rankings.

Perceptual Megapixel: Lens Sharpness Boiled Down to a Single Number

Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) charts are a very commonly used tool in the photo industry for measuring and describing how sharp a particular lens is. However, it's a system that is largely enigmatic to those outside the realm of optic experts and camera gearheads.

For those of you who don't want to learn how to read MTF charts, camera gear testing service DxOMark has announced a new metric that boils a lens' sharpness down to a single easy-to-understand-and-compare number: the Perceptual Megapixel.

Nikon D600 Sensor Found by DxOMark to be “Elite” and 3rd Best Ever

Nikon's new entry level full frame DSLR, the Nikon D600, is supposed to be a lightweight camera with heavyweight image quality. DxOMark confirms it to be true. The camera equipment measurement company has announced its sensor quality results for the D600, and the score is sure to put a big smile on the faces of Nikonians around the world. Rated at an overall score of "94", the camera received the third highest score ever, and falls in third place behind the D800 and D800E -- cameras that cost roughly $1,000 more.

Nikon D800E Steals the DxOMark Crown From Its Fraternal Twin, the Nikon D800

It's been almost three months to the day since the well-respected camera equipment rating service DxOMark crowned the Nikon D800 as its new king, giving the camera's 36.3MP sensor an incredible overall score of 95 -- but now its reign is over. The Nikon D800 has been officially beaten out, and appropriately enough it has happened at the hands of its nearly identical twin brother, the Nikon D800E.

Behind the Scenes with Camera and Lens Testing Service DxO Labs

Stephen Shankland over at CNET has written an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how DxO Labs -- one of the world's premier camera testing services -- evaluates equipment. DxO Labs is based near Paris, France and was the result of a 2003 spinoff from a company called Vision IQ, which specialized in swimming pool safety. Since then, the group has published over 185 in-depth camera reviews on its website DxOMark.
