DSLR Use in Pro Video to Plummet in Coming Years, Report Predicts

Since the introduction of 1080p video recording in the Canon 5D Mark II in 2008, there has been a strong adoption of DSLRs for pro and amateur video production purposes, and video features have become standard in DSLRs in recent years.

But the growth in DSLR usage for pro video applications may be rather short-lived: a recent report predicts that it will actually plummet over the next few years.

6 Reasons Why Digital SLRs Are (And Will Be) Cool

Digital SLRs don’t get a lot of love these days. Challenged by mirrorless cameras, smartphones, and occasionally even tablets, DSLRs have almost become the embodiment of old, uncool technology. They, for obvious reasons, are still the undisputed go-to choice for most professional photographers, as mirrorless cameras and point-and-shoots are currently the hottest alternative for enthusiasts, and iPhones have become the perfect fit for the clueless average Joe.

Teardown: A Look at the Guts of the Canon 5DS

When my company LensRentals first got the first Canon 5Ds and 5DSR cameras in stock, we immediately started screaming that we wanted to take one apart. It turns out we received enough 5Ds cameras to let us have a day with one to do just that. Of course, we don't expect to find out anything amazing and revealing. We expect it will look pretty much like the Canon 5DIII and 7DII on the inside. But hey, you never know. Plus we'll be repairing these soon enough, so we might as well find our way around now.

Review: Canon 5DS and 5DS R — The Nifty Fifties?

It’d be easy to dismiss the new Canon 5DS and 5DS R as 5D Mark III DSLRs with 50 megapixel sensors, but that’s exactly what they are.

But there are some minor, and yet fundamental, differences that separate the three versions of the 5D, to position each model for different photographers. I’ve had the opportunity to handle pre-production units of the two new models to compare with my 5D Markk III to see how well they perform…

Ax Smash, or: How NOT to Deal with DSLR Errors

YouTube celebrity Casey Neistat made the photography world cringe and groan today after publishing a new vlog titled "Quitter," which includes a particularly painful-to-watch case of violence against cameras. After repeatedly experiencing an error on his Canon 70D that caused him to lose footage, Neistat took an ax and destroyed both the camera and lens.

Edelkrone PocketSkater2 is a Mini Camera Dolly You Can Fit In Your Pocket

Camera dollies can add beautiful and fluid movement to your videos, but they tend to be both bulky and difficult to travel with for extended periods. Edelkrone is here to try and fix that problem with the PocketSkater2, a product they are calling “the world’s most flexible fully featured camera skater that can fit in your pocket.” With an extensive collection of mini-dollies already available, what does the PocketSkater2 bring to the party?

‘Mirrorless’ Now the Official Name of the Camera Market Dominated by Sony

Photographers can finally stop arguing over what to officially call the latest generation of interchangeable cameras that forgo the prisms of past DSLR brethren. A number of various names have existed including Compact System Cameras (CSC), Mirrorless System Cameras (MSC), Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM), Digital Interchangeable Lens System Cameras (DILSC), and Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens (EVIL). The Consumer Electronic Agency has picked a name, and they are keeping it simple.

How to Make DSLR Footage Look Like an Old VHS

Before getting on a plane for a vacation in Monaco recently, I knew that I wanted to do something different from the previous ‘holiday highlight’ videos that I've done before. We were only in Monaco for a few days and despite having an amazing time, the footage I got wasn't particularly exciting. I decided that I probably wouldn't end up doing anything with it unless I thought of an 'edge'.

Then I had an idea: to play off of the absurdity of how lavish the few highlights I caught on camera would look when strung together and make the video akin to the zeitgeist defining 80s pop music videos I've always loved (see Duran Duran - Rio).

Canon Issues Product Advisory for T6 White-Spotted Sensor Problem

A week ago, it came to light that some Canon T6s and T6si DSLRs were shipping with a strange defect: a large number of tiny white spots can be seen across the surface of the camera sensor, and the spots show up as dark dots in photos taken in certain conditions.

Today Canon has released an official product advisory confirming that this problem exists and promising free repairs for affected customers.

This Step-by-Step Teardown of the Nikon D80 Shows You What’s Inside a DSLR

After having his ex-girlfriend stab his Nikon D80 to death using a screwdriver and a pair of pliers, Jon of Prime Studios decided to "take lemons and make lemonade" by using the camera for an in-depth teardown. In the 16-minute video above, Jon takes the DSLR apart to show us what things are like on the inside and what some of the main components are.

Nikon Warns of More Fake DSLRs: D610 and D4S Now on Watch List

At the end of 2014, Nikon issued a notice saying that fake D800E DSLRs have been discovered during service center repairs. Technicians found that the cameras were actually ordinary D800 DSLRs (a few hundred dollars cheaper) that had their covers replaced with D800E shells.

Nikon issued an update today saying that other models are being faked as well, namely the D610 and D4S.

Nikon to Release Firmware Update That Will Make Its High-End DSLRs Better at Video

One of the big camera industry rumors this year that hasn't come to pass (yet) is the fancy new firmware update system Nikon reportedly has up its sleeve. Nikon Rumors still believes that leak to be legitimate.

Big firmware updates are coming though: Nikon announced today that it will be releasing major firmware updates this summer for a few of its high-end DSLRs that will make them more capable as filmmaking cameras.

Landscape Photographer David Noton Discusses the 50MP Canon 5DS

Photographer David Noton was chosen by Canon to be the first landscape photographer in the world to experience a preproduction model of the new 50.6 megapixel Canon 5DS, the world's highest resolution full frame DSLR. In this video, Noton, a Canon Explorer, shares his thoughts about the 5DS.

Pentax K-S2: A 20MP DSLR with More LCD Flexibility and Less LED Flashiness

Ricoh wants to win photographers over to its Pentax K-S line of DSLRs. The company's first offering, the K-S1, was laughed at for its strange futuristic design that included strange glowing lights in different parts of the camera body. Some called it the worst camera of 2014, and a botched marketing photo didn't help the cause.

Today Ricoh unveiled a successor that aims to turn the tide of public opinion. The K-S2 is a 20MP APS-C sensor DSLR that opts for a safer and more traditional design.

Watch How DSLR Shutters Work in 10,000FPS Super Slow Motion

If you want to see the mechanics of how a modern DSLR shutter works, one way to do so is through slow-motion captured with a high-speed camera. That's what Gavin Free of The Slow Mo Guys recently did by pointing a Phantom Flex at his Canon 7D and capturing what goes on inside the mirror box during exposures of various shutter speeds.

By slowing down the movements after shooting at up to 10,000 frames per second, we get to see exactly what goes on in the camera in the blink of an eye.

Disabled Photographer Petitioning Canon to Make a DSLR for Left-Handed People

Throughout the history of photography, cameras have mostly been designed with right handed people in mind. For DSLRs in particular, the shutter button and camera controls are usually on the right side of the camera, making it difficult to operate without using your right hand.

Florida-based photographer Sylvia Cacciatore is on a mission to change that: she's currently petitioning Canon to consider developing a camera that's designed specifically for left-handed people.

This DSLR Box Design Doubles as the Owner’s Manual

Sustainability is a big and important idea these days, and it's the one behind this new concept box design for DSLR cameras. It's clever packaging that has two uses: once the camera is safely transported to the owner, the box is taken apart and used as the owner's manual for the camera.

Rumor: The Next Canon 5D DSLR Model May Come in Three Different Flavors

The Canon 5D Mark III was first announced back in March 2012, so it should be due for a replacement soon. There are some interesting new rumors swirling around regarding what that successor might look like. If they are accurate, then Canon may be planning not one, but three DSLRs as followups to the 5D Mark III.
