Yesterday was really no different from any other day, except for the fact that I was developing a roll of 35mm film — that usually doesn’t happen. My husband Evan was sitting outside the door of our “darkroom” (read: spare bathroom) as I was hanging my film to dry, when I exclaimed, “These aren’t my photos!”

At first, I’m sure he thought that I had just taken some really rancid photos and didn’t want to claim ownership, but really, they weren’t my photos.

We’ve featured a few projects recently that combined portraits of people with photos of nature and various objects. While the look can be easily faked in Photoshop, a more satisfying way to shoot this kind of shot is to do the double exposure entirely in-camera.

American portrait photographer Gregory Heisler (whom we featured yesterday) is probably best known for his 70+ cover portrait photos for TIME magazine. One of his most famous portraits shows a double exposure, “two faced” photo of President George H.W. Bush. The photograph, shot entirely in-camera, was used as the first TIME “Person of the Year” cover photo.

Expose two images without advancing your film, and you have yourself an in-camera double exposure photograph. With the advent of digital photography, creating a double exposure image has largely moved to image editing programs. The MINIMO-X, however, is a digital camera that has double exposure built-in as a feature. The pocket-sized toy digicam lets you snap two exposures on the same frame, combining the fun of analog with the convenience of digital. You can find them for $130 each over in the Photojojo store.

Here’s a neat photo project for you to try: find a friend who loves photography just as much as you do, and share a roll of film. After one person finishes using up a roll, rewind it and send it to the other person. That’s what photographers Lexi and Natalie did with their project Exposed Far Away.
