Photographer Patrick Ng has an obsession with natural materials such as wood and leather. Recently, he decided to “woodenize” his beloved Canon F-1n SLR (a professional film SLR released back in 1976). He didn’t use a pre-made kit for the conversion, though… Instead, he simply ripped off the faux-leather and replaced it with faux-wood wallpaper.

Here’s a weekend project idea: personalize your camera’s wrist strap by making it look like a friendship bracelet! All you need is some embroidery thread and some time. Gadget painting company ColorWare is now offering its services for the Leica D-Lux 5, allowing you to choose custom colors for everything from the body to the hot shoe insert. If you’ve always wanted to make your D-Lux as painful on the eyes as some of Pentax’s limited edition cameras, now’s your chance. You can buy a custom painted $800 D-Lux directly from ColorWare for $1200, or send in your camera for a $400 paint job. It’s super pricey, but if you’re shooting with a Leica and even thinking about a custom paint job, then price probably isn’t one of your concerns.
Photo-opoly is a Monopoly clone in which you use 22 of your own photographs for “property”. An fun idea might be to print out your friend’s photographs, customize the game with them, and give it to them as an awesome photo gift. You can pick one up for $27 over on Amazon.
If you desperately want to make your phone look like a camera but our Leica-lookalike skin isn’t right for you, you can try printing out a camera yourself if you have a transparent case for your phone. yellow15 over at NikonJin recently transformed his iPhone 4 into a Nikon Rangefinder by printing the image out and sticking it behind his case. He also made the source image available for download. If you have a high quality printer at your disposal this could be quick way to give your phone a touch of photography awesomeness.
Pentax is trying all sorts of ways to differentiate its cameras from the 800-pound gorillas in the camera market, and apparently thinks customization is the best way to go. After allowing customizer the colors on traditionally boring-looking DSLRs with their K-x, they’ve just announced two new compact cameras that allow users to choose their own style.
