Analyzing a Collection of B&W Street Photos Captured Around the World

Last year I launched a new initiative called the Streettogs Academy, a biweekly challenge for motivating and sharpening the skills of street photographers around the world. Photographers are given 2 weeks to shoot photos for the latest theme and upload 1 to 3 of them to our Facebook page.

Our latest assignment was “Black and White.” The submitted photos that received the most attention from members of the group were those that had the simple basic requirement of a good image: a strong visual hook. Here’s a look at photos.

World Press Photo Disqualifies 20% of Finalists, Picks Photo of the Year for 2014

Danish photographer Mads Nissen has just been awarded World Press Photo of the Year 2014 for his photograph showing an intimate moment between a gay Russian couple. The selection was made after a whopping 20% of finalists were disqualified from the contest for altering their photos in a way that broke the post-processing rules.

Sony World Photography Awards Adds a Smartphone Category for 2015

Another sign of the times: the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards has announced that they will be launching an entirely new award today dedicated to mobile photography. Organizers say that the new award recognizes “how mobile photography has helped redefine the way in which photographers approach their art.”
