Why is Canon Putting Its Best Mirrorless Features Into a DSLR?

After Canon shared the development information on the impending 1D X Mark III last year, we called out that its specs not only blow away any previous notions of what a camera with physical moving parts could do but also noted that it's got all the makings of a great mirrorless camera... with a mirror.

The Top 10 DSLRs and Lenses Canon is Loaning Out at the Rio Olympics

This morning we woke up to an interesting bit of data from Canon Professional Services in our inbox. A week after sharing some crazy photos of their Rio stockpile with us, Canon is sharing the top 10 pieces of gear they're loaning out to sports photographers at the Olympics. Can you guess what they are?

Comparing Photos from the Canon 1D X, Nikon D810, and Pentax 645z

In this article, I'm going to share a simple comparison between photos taken with the Canon 1D X, Nikon D810, and Pentax 645z. First things first, this is not a scientific or carefully done test. Don’t read too much into it!

DigitalRev Pits the Canon 1D X Against the Nikon D4s in Paparazzi Style Shootout

The Canon 1D X is a couple of years old by now, but that doesn't mean it can't hold its own with the big boys of today. And so DigitalRev decided to put the camera up against Nikon's new D4s in a paparazzi-style shootout that you'll either find funny or annoying, depending on how you feel about DigitalRev humor in general. (Note: There are a few curse words and some innuendos in the video. Might be better to save this one for after work.)

Canon 1D X and 1D C May Have Autofocus Issues… When Shooting Below 0° C

A report on Canon Rumors is pointing out an issue with Canon's flagship full-frame DSLR and its Cinema counterpart: the 1D X and 1D C. Apparently users have been reporting problems with the 1D X's AF when shooting in less than 0° C, and if an anonymous report sent to CR is accurate, Canon knows about the problem.

Nikon D4s Beats Canon’s 1D X in DxOMark Tests, Falls Short of the Df in Low Light

The Nikon D4s is only a marginal improvement on the D4, but that didn't stop Nikon from touting it as significantly better in low light and faster to boot. The question is, do those claims hold up when you put the camera through its paces?

Well, the DxOMark team did just that, and the results may or may not surprise you depending on how much stock you put in press release boasting.

Shooting a Macklemore Concert from the Pit, POV Video With Photog Commentary

Photographer Jared Polin recently had the opportunity to photograph the musician Macklemore in concert. Fortunately, instead of just shooting the three song set and moving on with his life, he brought his GoPro along to give interested photographers a taste of what it's like taking photos from the pit at a packed out concert.

He put the above video together afterwards, adding his own commentary to give us some perspective of what exactly was going through his head as he tried to line up the perfect shot.

Canon 1D C Firmware Update is Service Center-Only, Has Photogs Wondering

Canon recently announced an exciting firmware update for its professional grade cinema camera: the EOS-1D C. But even though the fact that the 1D C can now shoot 25fps 4K is exciting, it's not improvements or bug fixes that have people talking, it's the fact that Canon is requiring that you go to an authorized service center to get the new firmware installed.

Canon 1D X Can Be Wirelessly Tethered Using a Sub-$50 Internet Adapter

Wireless connectivity is one of the hot features in the camera world these days, and many (if not most) new cameras either have built-in wireless connectivity or an optional wireless adapter that provides the feature. Unfortunately, the wireless adapters are often quite pricey, especially for higher-end cameras.

Here's something neat that you might be interested in knowing if you shoot with a Canon 1D X: you can connect a cheap WiFi adapter designed for homes and offices to give your camera wireless tethering!

Your Wi-Fi-Enabled DSLR Could Be Used by Others to Spy On You

If you're the proud owner of a Wi-Fi-connected digital camera, there's something you need to be aware of: your camera could be used to spy on you.

At the hacker conference Shmoocon 2013 last month, German security researchers Daniel Mende and Pascal Turbing reported on findings that Internet-connected cameras can easily be exploited and turned into spy cams.

Canon 1D X-style AF Illumination May Not Be Possible on the 5D Mark III

This past October, Canon addressed a big complaint photographers had about the 1D X by releasing a firmware update that introduced AF illumination (kinda) for shooting in dark environments. However, it wasn't only 1D X users that were complaining about the AF point visibility... 5D Mark III users were -- and are -- as well. If you own a 5DMk3 and have been waiting patiently for your own AF update, there's some good and bad news for you: Canon is reportedly working hard on the issue, but it might not be possible to implement the same feature given the way your camera is designed.

Canon 1D X and 1D C May Differ in More Than Firmware After All

Last month we wrote that DSLR blog EOSHD had learned from at least one Canon rep that the upcoming 1D C cinema DSLR was essentially a 1D X with tweaked firmware. This would mean that the 1D X is also capable of 4K video with "no heat or bandwidth issues." However, that claim is now being challenged by Canon Rumors, which writes that the cameras do in fact have some important hardware differences as well.

Strange: Canon’s 70-300mm L Lens Can Be Shoehorned into the 1.4x Extender

Canon released a new firmware update for the 1D X this morning that gives the DSLR cross-type autofocus when using certain telephoto and extender combos that have a max aperture of f/8. The announcement page includes a list of lens/extender combinations that are now compatible.

The first lens listed in the 1.4x Extender column is the "Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM." Problem is, that's not a lens that exists...

Canon 1D X Firmware Update Released, Boosts Autofocus Capabilities

The Canon 1D X firmware update that Canon accidentally leaked yesterday is now official and available over on Canon's website. The upgrade adds two autofocus features that photographers have been asking for since the camera was released: illuminated AF points and the ability to use cross-type autofocus at f/8.

Canon Prematurely Announces 1D X Red AF Points and Cross-Type AF at f/8

Ever since the Canon 1D X and 5D Mark III were released, photographers have been complaining about sometimes not being able to see the black AF points in the new 61-point system. In July we wrote that Canon was reportedly working on a fix. It now looks like the fix may soon be upon us, in the form of a firmware update.

A press release announcing the new firmware appeared briefly on Canon's website today but was quickly taken down once the news started getting around. The release mentioned two impending upgrades to the 1D X: red AF point illumination and cross-type autofocusing at f/8.

Canon’s 1D C 4K Cinema DSLR is Simply a 1D X with Different Firmware

If you thought the design and hardware specs of Canon's upcoming 4K-capable 1D C are strangely similar to the company's flagship 1D X, you're right: the two models feature identical hardware loaded with different firmware. At Photokina 2012, DSLR filmmaking blog EOSHD spoke to Canon representatives, who confirmed this fact to be true.

Shooting Studio-Lit Portraits of a Dancer in Motion at 14FPS Using a Canon 1D X

The 14 frame per second continuous shooting speed of the Canon 1D X DSLR probably isn't a feature you'd associate with studio-lit portraiture, but that's exactly what Australian fashion photographer Georges Antoni demonstrates in the short clip above. Using the Broncolor Scoro for stobe lighting, Antoni unleashes the full FPS potential of the camera in order to capture a model dancing in as many still frames as possible.

5K Footage Created by Shooting with the Canon 1D X at 14FPS

Canon's new flagship DSLR, the 1D X, can shoot 18.1-megapixel JPEG photographs at a staggering 14 frames per second in burst mode. This is nearly at the 16 frames per second needed to hide jerkiness from the human eye -- the flicker fusion threshold for moving images. Though the frame rate falls short of the 24fps used for Hollywood movies and by many video cameras, 18.1 megapixels per frame translates to 5K resolution in video lingo, while the video feature of the 1D X only shoots at 1080p (~2 megapixels per frame).

Gizmodo's Michael Hession realized that the camera's burst mode could still be used to produce reasonably smooth video. The clip above shows Hession's experiments with using the 1D X as a relatively cheap 5K video camera. 2,000 separate JPEG stills went into creating the two-minute-long video.

Canon Unveils the 1D X: One DSLR to Rule Them All

As the rumors foretold, Canon has announced a new DSLR today combining the 1D and 1Ds line of DSLRs into a single camera: the EOS-1D X. This beastly DSLR is an 18-megapixel jack of all trades. It's full frame, but still shoots 14fps using 61 autofocus points and a 252-zone metering system. ISO can be boosted up to a whopping 204,000. There's a large 3.2-inch LCD screen on the back, and a futuristic optical viewfinder that offers things such as a dual-axis electronic level and an on-demand grid. For remote shooting and file transferring, there's a handy built-in wired LAN connection. In terms of video, camera can also do 1080p recording at 24/25/30fps, along with 720p at 50/60fps. You'll have to start saving up though -- the 1D X will cost $6,800 when it's released in March 2012.
