Photographer Jared Polin recently had the opportunity to photograph the musician Macklemore in concert. Fortunately, instead of just shooting the three song set and moving on with his life, he brought his GoPro along to give interested photographers a taste of what it’s like taking photos from the pit at a packed out concert.

Canon recently announced an exciting firmware update for its professional grade cinema camera: the EOS-1D C. But even though the fact that the 1D C can now shoot 25fps 4K is exciting, it’s not improvements or bug fixes that have people talking, it’s the fact that Canon is requiring that you go to an authorized service center to get the new firmware installed. This past October, Canon addressed a big complaint photographers had about the 1D X by releasing a firmware update that introduced AF illumination (kinda) for shooting in dark environments. However, it wasn’t only 1D X users that were complaining about the AF point visibility… 5D Mark III users were — and are — as well. If you own a 5DMk3 and have been waiting patiently for your own AF update, there’s some good and bad news for you: Canon is reportedly working hard on the issue, but it might not be possible to implement the same feature given the way your camera is designed. Canon released a new firmware update for the 1D X this morning that gives the DSLR cross-type autofocus when using certain telephoto and extender combos that have a max aperture of f/8. The announcement page includes a list of lens/extender combinations that are now compatible.
The first lens listed in the 1.4x Extender column is the “Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.” Problem is, that’s not a lens that exists… Read more…
The Canon 1D X firmware update that Canon accidentally leaked yesterday is now official and available over on Canon’s website. The upgrade adds two autofocus features that photographers have been asking for since the camera was released: illuminated AF points and the ability to use cross-type autofocus at f/8. Read more…
Ever since the Canon 1D X and 5D Mark III were released, photographers have been complaining about sometimes not being able to see the black AF points in the new 61-point system. In July we wrote that Canon was reportedly working on a fix. It now looks like the fix may soon be upon us, in the form of a firmware update.
A press release announcing the new firmware appeared briefly on Canon’s website today but was quickly taken down once the news started getting around. The release mentioned two impending upgrades to the 1D X: red AF point illumination and cross-type autofocusing at f/8. Read more…
