Facebook Eases Stance on Breastfeeding Photos

Facebook doesn’t have it easy when it comes to moderating content; with approximately 1.3 billion active users, it’s inevitable there will be a few mess-ups over time. But one issue Facebook has continually struggled with sorting out is the social network's wishy-washy policy on breastfeeding photographs.

Birth and Breastfeeding Photos Removed, Restored on Facebook and Instagram

Keeping tabs on all of the photos that go up on Facebook and/or Instagram daily is no easy feat. Some 208,300 photos are uploaded to Facebook alone every minute; when you're trying to make sure that each and every one of those complies with the community standards, mistakes are bound to happen.

Photographer Katie DelaVaughn of PhotoRaya and breastfeeding support site The Leaky Boob both recently found themselves on the receiving end of these mistakes.

Facebook Apologizes After Banning Mom Over Breastfeeding Photo

Facebook has a strict no-nudity policy when it comes to sharing photos on its servers. Never was that more obvious than when the social network removed a risque-looking photo of a woman's elbow.

But mother and breastfeeding advocate Kristy Kemp thinks Facebook went too far when the company booted her from her own Breastfeeding/MamaTalk page for a photo uploaded by one of her 5,500 followers. In fact, she was actually able to squeeze an apology out of the social media giant over the misstep.
