Earlier today, online photo community and Flickr competitor 500px announced that it would be releasing an overhauled portfolio system very soon. Last week, Apple unexpectedly booted 500px’s photo sharing app from the iTunes App Store. At the time, Apple said that the issue was the app’s ability to search for photos featuring artistic nudity. Since then, reports have also stated that Apple received complaints of child pornography in the App, leading 500px to launch an ultimately unsuccessful search for these images.
Whatever the issue was, it seems it has been fixed to Apple’s specifications. The app is now back in the iOS app store and available to download. Read more…

Nikon’s free online image service my Picturetown never really caught on; given the stiff competition from big names like Flickr and 500px and, let’s face it, that unfortunate name, it’s not surprising. 500px is on a tear. The service has been growing like a weed as of late, and appears to have some ambitious plans in the works. The company announced today that it has acqui-hired (i.e. buying out a small company mainly for the team’s talent) the two-man development team Pulpfingers, creators of the popular iOS 500px browsing app ISO500.

Creative Commons licensing is becoming a common option on major photo and video sharing services — Flickr and YouTube, for example — but it’s not something that 500px offered — until now. The fast-growing Flickr rival is now onboard with flexible copyright agreements, rolling out Creative Commons licensing options for all of its users yesterday.

Since late last year the photo sharing site 500px — which even then was “growing like a weed” — has continued to expand, grow, add features, and otherwise challenge Flickr for online photography dominance. But Flickr hasn’t taken it lying down. In the past this involved a redesign to make the site more visually appealing and the addition of the Aviary photo editor.
