Voigtlander Releases a New 40mm f/2.8 M-Mount Lens…That Can’t Be Used with M-Mount Cameras

Photokina brought about a plethora of new gear from a number of companies, and easily overlooked among the larger announcements was a quirky new lens from Voigtlander: the 40mm f/2.8 Heliar M-mount lens. And the interesting thing about this new pancake lens is that even though it’s an M-mount piece of glass, it’s not compatible with M-mount cameras.

GIMP Adds New Interface and Nested Layer Groups in Version 2.8

The GNU Image Manipulation Project, more popularly known as GIMP, has just released version 2.8; the first complete GIMP overhaul since 2008. For those who don’t know (and there probably aren’t many) GIMP is famous for being a slightly more complicated (and a lot more free) alternative to Photoshop with fewer features. And it seems that, right on cue with the Adobe CS6 release, GIMP is trying to close the gap between the two products that’s been widening these last 4 years. Read more…

Canon Patent Describes a New 2.8x Teleconverter

There may soon be a new member of the Canon Extender EF lens family. A recently published patent filed by Canon describes a new 2.8x teleconverter. A 400 f/2.8L IS II would become a 1120mm f/8 lens with the teleconverter attached, though Canon will have to restore f/8 autofocus to its top-of-the-line cameras before that combo would become useful.
