Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) announced a new 247-megapixel medium-format image sensor roughly the same size as the 100- and 150-megapixel sensors in the Phase One IQ4 digital backs and the Hasselblad H6D series.
Sony has announced that it is close to releasing the IMX661, a 127.68-megapixel "large format" sensor with a global shutter. While aimed at the industrial market, this sensor can be seen as an indication that Sony is capable of releasing a global shutter sensor for the consumer market.
When Sony announced the 61MP a7R IV this week, both presenters were quick to say that the camera's full-frame sensor "rivaled medium format" thanks to its combination of resolution and dynamic range. But was that engineering truth, or marketing speak? Photographer Matt Granger decided to find out.

Sony recently updated their sensor roadmap for 2017 and 2018, and there's some exciting news for medium format shooters on it. Not only will cameras like the Fuji GFX and Hasselblad X1D get a 100MP option, Sony is also developing a 150MP sensor for larger cameras like the Phase One 100XF.
